أَشكوI complain إِلىto اللَهِGod أَنَّthat ليI have سَكَناًa beloved
أَبصَرتُهُI saw him فيin المَنامِthe dream غَضباناangry
I complain to God that I have a beloved
whom I saw in a dream, angry.
أَناI الفِداthe ransom وَالحِمىand the refuge لَمُحتَجِبٍfor one who veils himself
يُريدُhe wants قَتليkilling me ظُلماًunjustly وَعُدواناand with aggression
I am ransom and refuge for one who veils himself,
who seeks to kill me unjustly and wantonly.
يَمنَعُنيhe denies me النَومَsleep بِالصُدودِby turning away فَإِنand if
أَعتَبَhe makes amends شَيئاًat all فَذاكَthen that is أَحياناsometimes
He denies me sleep by shunning me; and if
he makes any amends, it is only now and then.
أَبصَرتُهُI saw him مُعرِضاًturning away فَياand oh عَجَباwhat a wonder
يَهجُرُنيhe shuns me نائِماًasleep وَيَقظاناand awake
I saw him turning away—oh, how strange!
He shuns me both asleep and awake.
عَجِبتُI marveled مِنهُat him إِذsince لَيسَdoes not يَرحَمُنيhe has mercy on me
وَلَستُand I do not أَسلوcease loving لِكَونِbecause of the occurrence of ماwhat كاناhas happened
I marveled at him, for he has no mercy on me,
yet I do not cease loving because of what has happened.
