حَتّى مَتى أَنا مَوقوفٌ عَلى ظَمَإٍ

حَتّى مَتى أَنا مَوقوفٌ عَلى ظَمَإٍ

بَينَ الطَريقَينِ لا وِرداً وَلا صَدرا

بَينَ الطَريقَينِ لا وِرداً وَلا صَدرا

How long shall I be kept waiting, thirsty,

How long must I stand thirsty

between the two roads, neither approaching water nor returning?

Between the two paths, no roses or chests

أَما لِذا الأَمرِ مِن وَقتٍ فَأَعلَمَهُ

أَما لِذا الأَمرِ مِن وَقتٍ فَأَعلَمَهُ

حَتّى أَكونَ لِذاكَ الوَقتِ مُنتَظِرا

حَتّى أَكونَ لِذاكَ الوَقتِ مُنتَظِرا

Is there no appointed time for this matter that I might know,

Is there no time appointed for this matter

so that I might await that time?

That I may wait for that time

يا ذا الرَسولُ الَّذي يَهدي السُرورَ لَنا

يا ذا الرَسولُ الَّذي يَهدي السُرورَ لَنا

إِنّي لَتَحسُدُ عَيني عَينَكَ النَظَرا

إِنّي لَتَحسُدُ عَيني عَينَكَ النَظَرا

O messenger, you who bring us joy,

O you the messenger who brings joy to us

indeed, my eye envies your eye its sight.

My eyes do envy your sight

أَمّا الخَيالُ فَإِنّي سَوفَ أَعذِرُه

أَمّا الخَيالُ فَإِنّي سَوفَ أَعذِرُه

عاتَبتُهُ فَأَجالَ الدَمعَ وَاِعتَذَرا

عاتَبتُهُ فَأَجالَ الدَمعَ وَاِعتَذَرا

As for the apparition, I shall excuse him.

As for my imagination, I will excuse it

I reproached him; then he let the tears flow and apologized.

I blamed it, and it shed tears and apologized

وَقالَ لي لا تَلُمني لَم أَزَل كَلِفاً

وَقالَ لي لا تَلُمني لَم أَزَل كَلِفاً

حَتّى أَتَيتُكَ في الظَلماءِ مُستَتِرا

حَتّى أَتَيتُكَ في الظَلماءِ مُستَتِرا

And he said to me, "Do not blame me; I remained lovesick

And it said to me, do not blame me, I have not ceased being charged

until I came to you in the darkness, concealed."
