كَيفَhow المَريضُthe sick one الَّذيwho تُحمىis forbidden عيادَتُهُvisiting him
إِنّيindeed I am عَلَيهِfor him لَذوsurely possessed of خَوفٍfear وَإِشفاقِand concern
How fares the sick one whom it is forbidden to visit?
How fares the sick man whose visitation I crave
I am indeed filled with fear and concern for him.
For him I feel such tenderness and care
يُرقىhe is treated with incantations لِيَسكُنَso it may subside ماwhat يَلقىhe suffers وَبيand in me سَقَمٌan illness
مِنfrom حُبِّهِlove for him لازِمٌpersistent ماnot إِنemphatic particle لَهُfor it راقِa healer using incantations
He is treated with incantations to ease his suffering, while I bear an illness
I wish that he find peace from the ills he doth face
From loving him—unrelenting, with no one to charm it away.
And that my steadfast love be his cure and prayer
ياO لَيتَif only ماwhat بِكَin you مِنof سُقَمٍillness تَحَوَّلَpassed بيto me
إِنّيindeed I am إِلىfor ذاكَthat ياO سُؤَليmy desire بِأَشواقِwith longings
If only the illness in you would pass to me!
Would that whatever sickness you do bear
Indeed, I yearn for that, O my desire.
Be transferred over to me, whom longing makes its lair
