قَدindeed جَمَّعَhas gathered اللَهُGod لِيfor me شَمليmy scattered affairs بِقُربِكُمُthrough your nearness
مِنfrom بَعدِafter ماthat كانَhad been ياO نَفسيmy soul الفِداthe ransom بَدَدَاscattered
God has indeed gathered my scattered self through your nearness,
God has gathered my family near me
After it had lain dispersed—O you for whom my soul is ransom!
After they were scattered, O my soul that I sacrifice
وَعادَand returned نَوميmy sleep وَقَدand already كانَhad been الرُّقادُslumber جَفاforsaking
عَينيmy eye وَبُدِّلتُand I was given instead مِنin place of لَذّاتِهِits delights السَهَداsleeplessness
And my sleep returned, though slumber had forsaken
And my sleep has returned after insomnia plagued me
My eyes, and I had been given sleeplessness instead of its delights.
My eyes and I was changed from its delights to wakefulness
وَكانَand had قَدalready غابَvanished لَمّاwhen غِبتِyou vanished عَنfrom جَسَديmy body
قَلبيmy heart وَأورِثتُand I was bequeathed همّاًa grief فَتَّتَshattered الكَبِداthe liver
And when you vanished, there had vanished from my body
And my heart had been absent when I was away from my body
My heart; I was bequeathed a grief that shattered my liver.
And I inherited worries that shredded my liver
وَكُنتُand I was أَسخَنَmost burning خَلقِcreatures of اللَهُGod كَلِّهِمُall of them
عَيناًof eye وأَطوَلَهُمand longest among them مِنfrom وَحشَتيmy loneliness كَمَداin grief
And of all God's creatures, I had the most burning
And I was the warmest of all God's creation
Eyes, and the longest-lasting grief from my loneliness.
With an eye and the longest in my loneliness extended
فَقَرَّتِso grew cool with joy العَينُthe eye ياO نَفسيmy soul بِقُربِكُمُthrough your nearness
وَغابَand vanished هَمّيmy sorrow وَوافَىand rejoined روحِيَmy spirit الجَسَداthe body
So my eyes grew cool with joy, O my soul, at your nearness,
So my eyes relaxed, O my soul, with your nearness
And my sorrow vanished, and my spirit rejoined my body.
And my worries disappeared and my soul returned to my body
فَالحَمدُso praise لِلَّهِto God ذيpossessor of النَعماءِblessings ياO سَكَنيmy solace
حَمداًpraise كَثيراًabundant لِرَبِّيto my Lord دائِماًcontinually أَبَداforever
So praise be to God, possessor of blessings, O my solace,
So praise be to God, the Lord of bounty, O my peace
Abundant praise to my Lord, always and forever.
Much praise to my Lord, forever and ever
ماwhat كانَwould have been شَأنِيَmy lot لَولاwere it not for أَنَّهُthat he is نَكَدٌa torment
وَشَأنُand the ways of كُلِّevery غَليظِhard القَلبِthe heart وَالكَبِدِand the liver
What would my lot have been, but for his vexing nature
My state would not have been if it were not for hardship
And the ways of all who are hard of heart and liver?
And the state of every hard and coarse hearted person
إِنif هُنتُI humbled myself عَزَّhe grew proud وَإِنand if واصَلتُI sought union صَدَّhe turned away وَإِنand if
أَغضَيتُI lowered my gaze لَمdid not يَلتَفِتhe turns نَحويtoward me وَلمَand did not يَكَدِhe nearly does so
If I humble myself, he grows proud; if I seek union, he turns away; and if
If I become meek, he prevents, and if I reconcile, he turns away, and if
I lower my gaze, he does not turn toward me, nor even come close to doing so.
I look aside he neither turns to me nor cares
أَقولُI say لمّاwhen مَلانيhe filled me جَفوَةًestrangement وَهَوىًand passion
ياO مَنthe one كَلِفتُI became infatuated بِهِwith him لِلشُّؤمِfor misfortune وَالنَّكَدِand misery
I say, when he has filled me with estrangement and passion:
I say, when harshness and passion have filled me:
O you with whom I am infatuated, to my misfortune and misery!
O you whom I burdened with misfortune and misery
أَشكوI lament هَواكَlove for you وَلاand not أَبغيI seek سِواكَanyone other than you وإِنeven if
جَرَّعتَنيyou made me swallow غُصَصَchoking pangs الأَحزانِthe sorrows وَالكَمَدِand grief
I lament my love for you, yet seek no one but you, even if
I complain of your love, and desire none but you, even if
You force me to swallow the choking draughts of sorrow and grief.
You make me drink the bitterness of sorrows and troubles
