لَعَمريby my life لَئِنif indeed كانَis المُقَرِّبُwhat brings one close مِنكُمُto you
هَوىًlove صادِقاًsincere إِنّيindeed I لَمُستَوجِبُsurely deserving of القُربِcloseness
By my life, if what brings one close to you
By my life, if he who brings you closer
Is sincere love, I surely deserve closeness.
Is sincere in his love, I deserve such closeness,
سَأَرعىI shall care وَماthough not اِستَوجَبتِyou have earned مِنّيfrom me رِعايَةًcare
وَأَحفَظُand I shall preserve ماwhat ضَيَّعتِyou have squandered مِنof حُرمَةِthe sanctity of الحُبِّlove
I shall care for you, though you have earned no care from me,
I will tend what you have not tended in me,
And preserve the sanctity of love that you have squandered.
And guard what you neglected of love's sanctity.
مَتىwhenever تُبصِرينيyou see me ياO ظَلومُZalum (cruel one) تَبَيَّنيyou will discern
شَمائِلَthe traits of باديone displaying البَثِّanguish مُنصَدِعِshattered القَلبِthe heart
Whenever you see me, O Zalum, you will discern
When will you see me, oh unjust one, and realize
The traits of one whose grief is plain, whose heart is shattered—
The symptoms of one whose inner secrets and heart are torn open?
بَرِياًinnocent تَمَنّىhe wished for الذَنبَsin لَمّاwhen ظَلَمتِهِyou wronged him
لِكَيماso that يُقالَit might be said الصَرمُthe estrangement مِنfrom سَبَبِthe cause of الذَنبِsin
An innocent man who wished he had sinned when you wronged him,
Innocent, he wished for sin when you wronged him,
So it might be said, 'The estrangement was caused by sin.'
So that it would be said his death was caused by his sin.
وَقَدand indeed كُنتُI used to أَشكوcomplain of عَتبَهاher blame وَعِتابَهاand her reproaches
فَقَدyet now فَجَعَتنيshe has bereft me بِالعِتابِof reproaches وَبِالعَتبِand of blame
And I used to complain of her blame and reproaches;
And I used to complain of her rebukes and reproaches
Yet now she has bereft me of reproaches and blame.
She distressed me with reproach and blame;
وَإِنّيand indeed I لَأَرعىsurely safeguard غَيبَهاher honor in her absence وَأَحوطُهُand protect it
وَإِنeven though كُنتُI am مِنهاbecause of her فيin عَناءٍhardship وَفيand in كَربِanguish
And I surely safeguard her honor in her absence and protect it,
Yet I tend to her absence and protect it,
Though I suffer hardship and anguish on her account.
Even when she gives me misery and distress.
