لَعَمري لَئِن أَمسى بِغَيرِكِ ظَنُّهُم

لَعَمري لَئِن أَمسى بِغَيرِكِ ظَنُّهُم

لَذَلِكَ أَخفى لِلوِصالِ وَأَستَرُ

لَذَلِكَ أَخفى لِلوِصالِ وَأَستَرُ

By my life, if their suspicions have settled on someone other than you,

By my life, if others think ill of me at night

that surely keeps our union more secret and better concealed.

It's for that I've hidden our love and been discreet

يَظُنُّ بِيَ الناسُ الظُنونَ وَأَنتُمُ

يَظُنُّ بِيَ الناسُ الظُنونَ وَأَنتُمُ

هَوايَ الَّذي أُخفي إِلى يَومَ أُقبَرُ

People entertain suspicions about me, yet you are

فَلا تَحمِلي ذَنباً عَليَّ مَقالَهُم

So do not hold their words against me as a fault,

So don't blame me for what they say

nor mention anything of that which should remain unspoken.

And don't recall what's best forgotten
