وَحَوراءَand a dark-eyed maiden مِنamong حورِthe houris الجِنانِof Paradise مَصونَةٍsheltered
يَرىsees وَجهَهُhis face فيin وَجهِهاher face كُلُّevery ناظِرِonlooker
And a sheltered, dark-eyed maiden, one of Paradise's houris—
Every onlooker sees his own face reflected in hers.
وَقَفتُI stood بِهاbeside her لاnot أَستَطيعُI can إِشارَةًa gesture
وَلاnor نَظَراًa glance وَالطَرفُand the gaze لَيسَis not بِصابِرِpatient
I stood beside her, unable to make a gesture
Or cast a glance, though my gaze was impatient.
فَماso ... not طَرَفَتturned عَينايَmy two eyes لَمّاwhen تَعَرَّضَتshe appeared
لِشَيءٍto anything سِوىexcept إيمائِهاher signaling بِالمَحاجِرِwith her eyes
So, when she appeared, my eyes did not turn
To anything but the signals she made with her eyes.
تَواقَفَstood facing one another مَعشوقانِtwo beloveds ثُمَّthen تَناظَراthey gazed at each other
فَماso ... not مَلكاthey both could restrain فَيضَthe flood الدُموعِof tears البَوادِرِsuddenly welling
Two lovers stood face to face, then gazed at each other;
So they could not restrain the flood of sudden tears.
