While he roamed there, a night overtook him,
Storm-laden: winds tossed him about, and rain poured.
فَدَناso he drew near إِلىto أَرطاتِهِhis arta shrubs لِتُجِنَّهُto shelter him

So he approached his arta shrubs, that they might shelter him,
At times bending onto his forelegs and digging.

Until, when he thought he had done enough
And taken cover, pale, loose sand shifted beneath him.

He was chilled, his hide like Coptic linen;
His thigh-sinew quivered with cold, and he grew numb.

And it was as though from their branches poured
Pearls, cascading over his flanks.

Until, when dawn's shaft broke through,
And his night drew back from him, falling away,

And he saw the sky in the lingering gloom, though scarcely
A clear patch of its expanse appeared to him,

He made to emerge, but a faint sound startled him,
Drawing his features tight; he was terrified of it.

It came from a man in tattered rags, around whom ran
Droop-eared, gaunt hounds, lean in their collars.

He veered away in flight, and they pursued him,
And the beast drove his legs hard, galloping.

Until, when the wild bull's terror had subsided
And he recovered, he turned toward them, rousing himself to fight.

Then they knew, when they saw him battle-ready,
Walking with a warrior's spirit, undaunted,

Enraged—and he brandished his head's twin spears at them—
That a red death had been destined for them.

He skewered them with the tip of a dusky, blood-drinking horn,
Like a spearhead, the wounds it made gaping open.

And he moved on at leisure, shaking a keen-pointed horn,
Sated with clotted blood from their flanks, dripping.
