رَحَلَتsaddled أُمامَةُUmama لِلفِراقِfor departure جِمالَهاher camels
رَحَلَت أُمامَةُ لِلفِراقِ جِمالَها
كَيماso that تَبينَshe might depart وَماand not تُريدُyou wish زِيالَهاher departure
كَيما تَبينَ وَما تُريدُ زِيالَها
Umama saddled her camels for departure,
so that she might leave, though you do not wish her to go.
وَلَئِنand even if أُمامَةُUmama فارَقَتhas parted أَوor بَدَّلَتhas substituted
وَلَئِن أُمامَةُ فارَقَت أَو بَدَّلَت
وُدّاًa love بِوُدِّكَin place of your love ماnot صَرَمتَyou have severed حِبالَهاher bonds
وُدّاً بِوُدِّكَ ما صَرَمتَ حِبالَها
And even if Umama has parted, or has substituted
another love for yours, you have not severed her bonds.
وَلَئِنand even if أُمامَةُUmama وَدَّعَتكَhas bid you farewell وَلَمand has not تَخُنbetrayed
وَلَئِن أُمامَةُ وَدَّعَتكَ وَلَم تَخُن
ماwhat قَدalready عَلِمتَyou knew لَتَذكُرَنَّyou will surely remember وِصالَهاher union with you
ما قَد عَلِمتَ لَتَذكُرَنَّ وِصالَها
And even if Umama has bid you farewell and has not betrayed
what you knew, you will surely remember your union with her.
إِربَعlinger عَلىat دِمَنٍcampsite ruins تَقادَمَhas long passed عَهدُهاtheir time of habitation
إِربَع عَلى دِمَنٍ تَقادَمَ عَهدُها
بِالجَوفِin al-Jawf وَاِستَلَبَand has snatched away الزَمانُtime حِلالَهاtheir dwellers
بِالجَوفِ وَاِستَلَبَ الزَمانُ حِلالَها
Linger at campsite ruins whose habitation is long past,
in al-Jawf; time has snatched away their dwellers.
دِمَنٌruins لِقاتِلَةِof the slayer الغَرانِقِof handsome youths ماnothing بِهاin them
دِمَنٌ لِقاتِلَةِ الغَرانِقِ ما بِها
إِلّاexcept الوُحوشُthe wild beasts خَلَتwere alone لَهُwith it وَخَلاand it was alone لَهاwith them
إِلّا الوُحوشُ خَلَت لَهُ وَخَلا لَها
Ruins of the slayer of handsome youths; nothing is there
but wild beasts, alone with it, and it alone with them.
بَكَرَتshe came early تُسائِلُasking عَنabout مُتَيَّمٍa lovesick man أَهلَهُhis family
بَكَرَت تُسائِلُ عَن مُتَيَّمٍ أَهلَهُ
وَهيَand she الَّتيthe one who فَعَلَتdid بِهِto him أَفعالَهاher deeds
وَهيَ الَّتي فَعَلَت بِهِ أَفعالَها
She came early to ask a lovesick man's family about him,
yet she was the very one who had wrought her deeds upon him.
كانَتshe used to تُريكَshow you إِذاwhen نَظَرتَyou looked أَمامَهاin front of her
كانَت تُريكَ إِذا نَظَرتَ أَمامَها
مَجرىthe course السُموطِthe necklaces وَمَرَّةًand sometimes خَلخالَهاher anklet
مَجرى السُموطِ وَمَرَّةً خَلخالَها
She would show you, when you looked at her from the front,
where her necklaces lay, and sometimes her anklet.
دَعleave aside ماwhat مَضىhas passed مِنهاconcerning her فَرُبَّfor many a مُدامَةٍwine
دَع ما مَضى مِنها فَرُبَّ مُدامَةٍ
صَهباءَtawny عارِيَةُfree of القَذىspecks سَلسالُهاits smooth-flowing draught
صَهباءَ عارِيَةُ القَذى سَلسالُها
Leave what has passed with her; for many a wine—
tawny, its smooth-flowing draught free of specks—
باكَرتُهاI sought it early عِندَat الصَباحِdaybreak عَلىupon نُجىًhigh ground
باكَرتُها عِندَ الصَباحِ عَلى نُجىً
وَوَضَعتُand I unloaded غَيرَexcept for جِلالِهاits saddlecloths أَثقالَهاits burdens
وَوَضَعتُ غَيرَ جِلالِها أَثقالَها
I sought out at daybreak upon high ground,
and unloaded its burdens, save its saddlecloths.
وَصَبَحتُهاand I served it at dawn غُرَّbright الوُجوهِthe faces غَرانِقاًhandsome youths
وَصَبَحتُها غُرَّ الوُجوهِ غَرانِقاً
مِنfrom تَغلِبَTaghlib الغَلباءِthe mighty لاnot أَسفالَهاits lowly men
مِن تَغلِبَ الغَلباءِ لا أَسفالَها
And I served it at dawn to bright-faced, handsome youths
of mighty Taghlib, not its lowly men.
إخسَأbegone إِلَيكَback with you جَريرُJarir إِنّاindeed we مَعشَرٌa people
إخسَأ إِلَيكَ جَريرُ إِنّا مَعشَرٌ
نِلناwe reached السَماءَthe sky نُجومَهاits stars وَهِلالَهاand its crescent
نِلنا السَماءَ نُجومَها وَهِلالَها
Away with you, Jarir! We are a people
who have reached the sky—its stars and its crescent.
ماnot رامَناsought us out مَلِكٌa king يُقيمُto straighten قَناتَناour spearshaft
ما رامَنا مَلِكٌ يُقيمُ قَناتَنا
إِلّاexcept that اِستَبَحناwe ravaged خَيلَهُhis cavalry وَرِجالَهاand its men
إِلّا اِستَبَحنا خَيلَهُ وَرِجالَها
No king has sought us out to straighten our spearshaft
without our ravaging his cavalry and its men.
