Suad has departed, and both eyes are sleepless.

And she carried off his reason; the heart is love-stricken.

Sulayma once would keep her word,

But today Salma's promises have failed:

Flashes, the flickering of lightning that brings us no rain,

Even if Sulayma's bosom and neck were revealed.

If you see me bent by gray hair and old age,

Trembling like a vulture—for man is broken down—

Youthful passion once held its place in me,

And slender, trembling women once led me.

Ah, how scant the kindness of beauties—how they play him false!

His draught among them is a trickle, his thirst left unquenched.

    فَهُنَّ مِنّي إِذا أَبصَرنَني حيدُ

    They turned away from gray streaks gleaming on his head;

Whenever they see me, they shy away.

Once they knew in me a lovely smile,

And a hair-parting laid bare by clustered locks.

Now they retain only a little knowledge of me,

Neither stingy nor generous with affection.

    وَالعَهدُ مُتَّبَعٌ ما فيهِ مَنشودُ

    My bond was once fresh, then it was snatched away;

The bond is pursued, what it held still sought.

They say, 'You are no husband to be obeyed,

Nor can youth already gone be brought back.'

Can youth already gone be brought back?

Or can a remedy be found to reverse gray hair?

The gray-haired will never grow young, nor will they find

Youth's equal for themselves while boughs still put forth leaves.

Truly, youth is praised for its bright freshness,

But gray age is shunned and turned away.

As for Yazid, I shall not forget him

Until a hollowed tomb conceals me in the earth.

May your Lord reward you on behalf of an isolated, lonely man,

Whom an offense and banishment drove from his family,

Exposed to danger, assailed by all mankind,

As though he were a roasting-spit in summer's scorching wind,

    With Yusuf's reward—kindness and forgiveness—

Or as Harun and Dawud were rewarded,

Or with what Nuh received aboard his ark,

When He answered Nuh in his distress.

He gave him this world's pleasures and settled him

In a garden whence come delight and everlasting life.

The bounty of your favors still rains upon me,

Though I am far away, with gift upon gift from you.

Will a she-camel of proven strength bring me to Yazid,

    Like a solid, unyielding boulder?

One of those that, once their temper softens,

Still have their frame and rugged strength thereafter.

    فَالعيسُ مُنعَلَةٌ أَقرابُها سودُ

    She leads lean camels, worn thin by our swift pace;

The pale camels are shod, their flanks black.

A scorching wind lashes them each noontide,

All sore in their footpads and utterly spent.

She is like a wild ass bound for water, who pastured his mates

At Dhat al-Salasil until the stalks dried up.

Then he sought spring pasture at Ubli, though heat had gripped

Its low sand-hills and lofty, rugged knolls.

He stayed on watch, the pools already hot,

And thought the pools' watercourse was drained.

Then he pressed on, racing with them—not a feeble

Colt, nor an aged male worn out by repeated strain.

Hollow-bellied, made lean by running all his summer,

As though he were a wolf upon their tracks.

Broad-flanked, surging through the forenoon, loud of voice,

His shoulder-mane like a grape-cluster in the mirage.

    قَد كانَ في نَحرِهِ مِنهُنَّ تَفصيدُ

    They strike him with hard hoofs, yet cannot dishearten him;

Already they have left his breast scored and bleeding.

They glance off his thick hide, just as

Boulders glance off shields of ox-hide.

When he lunges in rage, they beware his charge,

Scattering in terror of him, far and wide.

    في كُلِّ مُنبَطَحٍ مِنهُ أَخاديدُ

    He hurtles into Ubli's hollow, gouging its earth;

Furrows mark every level stretch of it.

When he seeks them outside their receptive seasons, they recoil

From him, long-limbed and tall as spear-shafts.

At times he turns his nose aside from them,

His breast and both sides of his neck all scratched.

They drench with urine their submerged young,

Whose enclosing lock no keys have opened:

Two-month-old daughters, with no down yet grown,

    Like jerboas, red or black,

Like tadpoles sunk deep within the wombs.

The opening is sealed around them, and sealed it remains.

They die at times, and live within their beds,

As swivel-pins work loose within their bonds.

As though his braying among them, when they had reached

Fasil's twin springs just before dawn, were birdsong.

The archers remained seated in their lookout posts

For the hunt; each morning was a feast-day to them.

Like wolves, whenever they sensed quarry,

A hush fell over them, intent and motionless.

With every curved, ringing bow there was readied

A close-twisted, rasping string, drawn taut in the hand.

    لَهُم شِواءٌ إِذا شاؤوا وَتَقديدُ

    At the watering-places, no quarry they shoot dies out of sight;

They have roast meat whenever they wish, and meat to dry.
