Has your eye deceived you, or did you see at Wasit

In the predawn darkness, a phantom of al-Rabab?

And she appeared before you at al-Abalikh, after

She had severed friendship and union at Abraq.

    A she-jinn assumed a ghoul's form to frighten us,

And beautiful women show you terrors.

From their indiscretions they stretch toward youthful passion

A long cord with which they snare the wayward.

Never have I seen guile like theirs when it works

Among us, nor snares like their snares.

They bestow abuse upon those they love,

And speak kindly to those they loathe.

They keep their pledge to you while they see you present,

And when you grow weary, they become weary of you.

And if they promise you a gift, they fail to deliver it,

And with their promises you find delay.

And when they call you their uncle, it is

A kinship that increases your folly in their eyes.

And if you weigh their judgment against youthful passion,

Passion outweighs their judgment and tips the balance.

Is this a final break from you, Umm Muhallim,

Or is it coyness? Such coyness has lasted long.

And you well know, when heavily pregnant she-camels return at dusk,

Shuffling like ostrich chicks, a north wind knocking them down,

Pelting the thorn-trees with a shower of its snow,

Until it lies in heaps upon the thorn-trees overnight,

That we hasten fresh-slaughtered meat to our guest

Before our household, and we slay champions.

O sons of Kulayb, indeed my two uncles are the ones

Who killed kings and shattered fetters.

And their brother al-Saffah kept his horses thirsty,

Until they reached al-Kulab's pools thirsting.

They emerge against them from al-Kulab's pass,

At the trot of beasts of prey racing to scant pools.

Each a spare horse led alongside, strong in its frame,

Docile to the reins, seeming to you to prance proudly,

And a taut-muscled mare, with weapon-marks upon her throat,

As though crimson dye lay upon her breast.

Hollow-bellied, drawn lean by journeys through the night

And their charges whenever they meet battle.

Their backs salt-whitened, as though you had clothed them

In saddlecloths of water, when their sweat had dried.

Rarely do they meet the morning anything but lean,

Riding into one ordeal amid the calamities.

So they ground down the kings' encampment with their breasts,

Until they shod themselves with sandals of blood.

And annihilated your people, Jarir, and others,

And wiped out encampments within al-Rabab's rings.

And indeed they entered Shaqiq's house upon him,

And indeed they saw a mole upon Nadrah's leg.

And the sons of Ghudanah, their eyes staring,

Run on foot beneath the horses' bellies.

They carry them as dogs carry their pups,

Until they reach Ura'ir and Uthal.

Their eyes glowering toward Riyah, after

They had made shadows for Dabbah with their spears.

And they left no maiden reaching puberty among al-Ghawadir

Without breaking an anklet upon her leg.

And al-Hudhayl indeed rose against you and struck you

At Irab, where he apportions the spoils.

In a great host calling al-Araqim; never were

His horsemen unarmed or inept riders.

With horses gaunt of face, as though

They had caught a wasting sickness from the toil of galloping.

And indeed they wheeled against Fazarah in a charge,

Like a returning blank gaming arrow, then swept about.

So they gave those they opposed a bitter cup to drink,

And swept away the fortune of the sons of al-Hubab, and it was gone.

They overrun Kahil's carcass, which they stripped bare,

And Ibn al-Muhazzam they have left abased.

So they killed those who bore arms, and others,

And left their routed survivors as dependents upon you.

And al-Jahhaf indeed wept at what they inflicted

On al-Shar'abiyyah, when he saw the children.

And you, Jarir, have undertaken a task beyond your power,

And exposed your mother's private parts to the ignorant.

And when the two branches of Wa'il rise toward glory,

And the valley gathers against you and floods,

You are a speck of debris in a murky, foaming wave,

Flung by the oncoming torrent, then lost, utterly lost.

And they trod upon the sacred sites at Mina,

Until they cast mountains upon the mountains.

So call to your sheep, Jarir, for

Your soul has fed you only delusion in solitude.

Your soul has promised you that you might rival Darim,

Or be the equal of Hajib and Iqal.

And if you place your father in their scales,

Its iron pointer leaps toward you, and he rises.

Indeed, lordship and loud barking belong to Darim,

And their brother is he who makes light of heavy burdens.

Those who withhold water until they drink

Its choicest water, and divide it into bucketfuls.

While Ibn al-Maraghah keeps his asses penned,

Driven off like a strange she-camel, they taste no moisture.
