Come, ask al-Jahhaf whether he seeks vengeance

for those slain among Sulaym and Amir.

O Jahhaf, if one day we strike you, and there crash

against you the mighty waves of the brimming seas,

you will be like specks of refuse in the foam swept along

by the sea, or like drift carried by fiercely howling winds.

Indeed, utterly doomed is whoever assails a poet

who holds supreme ascendancy over every poet.

He charges with a vast host whose numbers cannot be counted,

and every gazer stares into it, dazed and motionless.
