أَم نِسمَة هاجَت الاِشواق من أضم
Was it from a flash that passed by night through the deep gloom of darkness,
Is it the glimmer of Sirius in the darkness of night,
or a breeze from Idam that stirred longing?
Or a gentle breeze that stirred up longing from within me,
فَجَدَّدَتso it renewed ليfor me عَهداa bond بِالغَرامِin passionate love مَضىbygone

So it renewed for me a bygone bond of passionate love,
And renewed for me a passion of love now past,
and made me yearn for my loved ones at Dhu Salam.
Drawing me on towards my love on a safe path?

My heart called out, after solace,
what I had known in my heart since long ago.
To what I had long known within it from old.

And love of a beloved's appearance stirred me toward him;
And roused me to love's fervour for my darling,
he erases and establishes whatever he desires from my nonbeing.
Whose sight destroys and creates all that he desires.

He erases my forgetfulness, just as he erases his wrongdoing;
He destroys my solace even as He forgives His wrongs to me,
he is enough for me, for my torment for him is like bliss.
To Him it suffices that my torment in Him is like bliss.

The slanderers sought to make me forget my love for him;
Those who wish me ill sought to wean me from my darling's love,
I did not satisfy them in their reproach, nor did I seek to.
But I did not heed their rebukes, nor cast aspersions.

How did love's anguish become radiant, O you who possess me,
How can the heart be illuminated, O You who possess me,
when the evidence of love among lovers is like knowledge?
When passion in lovers is like sure knowledge?

Ah, he turns away from me, yet interposes himself
So there He is, turning from me, standing in my way,
between leisure and my heart, while he is my accuser.
While I stand between emptiness and my heart, and He is suspicious.

Enough of love for me is what has led to my ruin,
It suffices me of love what led me to ruin,
and the pain and sickness I have suffered.
And what sorrows and sickness I endured.

How can I rein in my desire for Him,
and say, 'O soul, abandon what brings regret'?
And say to my soul: “Leave what causes regret!”

And I delighted in imploring the Chosen One,
the herald calls, and people come alive from a womb [wording uncertain].
When the caller calls out: “O people, seek pardon!

But what am I, that I could make such a sacrifice, when my being is as nothing?

The spirit - what is it, that I could sacrifice it for Him,
while it is but a lowly bird; injustice and darkness grow jealous [wording unclear].
When it is the elixir before which darkness and injustice vanish?

My life - its heavy burdens have been erased by time,
and time's vicissitudes scattered it amid accusations.
Scattered by the turns of fate and suspicions.

I strayed from it, stumbling in desire and passion.

Who will lead me to the courtyards of His sanctuary, that entering them

Might soothe eyes pouring forth tears of blood?
