Passion toyed with a far-off lover's heart,
The passion played with the heart of a remote lover
and gave him a cup of anguish and suffering.
And gave him a cup of anguish and hardship

What ails him, clinging to passion until he came
What is wrong with him that he stuck to passion until
to live in love, never free of torment?
In love, he did not stop wandering

Before ardent love, he had known no inward anguish;
He did not know passion before falling in love
did he wander after love into a trackless wilderness?
After falling in love, did he get lost in confusion

أَحشاؤُهُ لإترتجي لِشفاء
Or did he roam, mad with longing, among the fair, so that
Or did he become passionate in love, so
his inmost parts have no hope of healing?
His insides started shaking for recovery

Why does he both lament and bless a state
What is wrong with him that he complains yet thanks
in which he has become one of the martyrs?
A state with which he became one of the martyrs

he loves, at morning and evening.
He loves in the morning and evening

One for my torment, the other for my misery

So I came with my crime, feeling terrified by my shyness
in my transgression, made desolate by my shame.
To the field of your forgiveness

The valley of ignorance threw my heart into
from my self that commands evil, and from adversity.
The suggestions of evil and harm
