    O one whom I am proud to love, and for whom

    I yearn when his name is mentioned in a gathering.

    فَلَم اِرتَضى بعلو قَدر النَرجِس

    The rose, even on the cheek, is armed with a thorn;

    why, then, has it accepted the narcissus's exalted rank?

    Why has the glance's arrow lodged in my heart?

    Alas for what those bows have done!

    He assails and fears no reproacher's blame,

    And he oppresses, while holding sway over souls.

    For his heart is like hard rock, save that

    his charms bloom in a garden of fine silk.
