You were the morning bird and the dream in wine,

and an intoxicating fragrance, O my youth.

You were love's phantom—rather, its overflowing enchantment,

answering my entreaty in my torment.

You were the symbol of joy, song, and light,

cleaving the darkness like a shooting star.

You were the poetry of roses, the reed flute, and the oud,

and as light as the leap of bubbles.

You were beauty's slave, without vulgarity,

until it passed, and you disdained feigning youth.

You were life's treasure—nay, despite my sighs

and my life, one of the sweet dreams.

You were this and more than this—so what

has remained but dew and dust?
