Where is spring? I asked about it, but found

no reply except the downpour of rain.

It departed without arriving, vanishing as though

it had lived in illusions and thoughts.

They said: "It was the atoms: when they exploded,

they threw the atmosphere's order into utter disarray."

So spring itself became autumn, as though

it had gone mad from rain and whirlwind,

and from thunderclaps that spoke like cannons,

atomic, and exchanged volleys of fire.

So its birds veiled themselves, and face-veils shrouded

its flowers; the flowing brook wept.

And inwardly I wept, as though bereft of

my family and every gathering of nighttime companions.

And when stillness encamped among us, I took it for

a clamor of anxiety and warning.

Where are graciousness and calm, united,

and safety, together holding sway over the eyes?

Where is beauty, dancing and at play

in the light, the most wondrous enchanter of lights?

Where are the maidens—the bees—gathering their honey,

like the money-changer and his peer, the perfumer?

Where are the flowers that so often vied with

my longing, never hiding themselves from sight?

Where are the meadows, adorned as brides,

like the brides of dreams in March?

Where are the sparrows that had not yet finished

their nests with love and secrets?

All of them vanished, like phantoms when they fall,

and a melody above severed strings.

Dream of them, O heart—or else forget them,

for all that spring has given is on loan.

And the year has not known life, as though it were

a meaning contained implicitly in death.

You await bounty from a dead person's generosity—

it was nothing but the stumbling of fate.

Another year I shall begin tomorrow,

    beaming like roses in May.

If my old homeland has spurned me, undiminished remains

my love, my banner in the homeland that honors me.

Or if spring has shunned me, perhaps it is

a mirror of what remembrance has made me suffer.

For a year I shall keep watching for its affection,

until it returns to us from its travels.

And perhaps a messenger of love will come

from Egypt, after enjoyment and hiding away,

then, through him, I shall see gardens fragrant with love,

and my poems will pour forth from their poetry.
