Wadiʿ, the friend, said in his reflections:

Life is harsh to the virtuous with calamities.

And he went on citing examples from his works

of benefactors, whether Time gladdened them or grieved them:

One who lent lofty literature luster with his breath,

and his share of Time's ingratitude was whatever it willed.

Affliction involving spouse and child was not enough for him,

until people's ingratitude showed him storms.

Why lament, when the world's calamities

never end, and echoes bring back yesterday?

Make your endurance vengeance for its malice,

and scoff at it whenever it makes the wise wretched.

We came into the universe in atoms long ago,

and have not left it, as phantoms and lights.

And none of us knows its essence,

even if a tireless wanderer delves deep into its past.

And if we know, we know only a few imaginings,

as though what we encounter of the sea were dewdrops.

Letter-dots whose nature we cannot define are not

a flawless poem that wooed us today.

Nor will the tragedies that dried up our tears

with their fire add torn limbs to the universe.

Creation has matched destruction upon its stages,

as you know, and misery has matched bliss.

And I did not complain out of anguish, but in keeping

with art; I pass through the dead and the living.

So walk with me, O writer whose life is burning anguish,

in life's wilderness, engulfed in passions.

We live as flame, as though we were akin to gods,

and with the fire's end we become inspiration.
