Two festivals: a festival of liberation and optimism

In abundance, and a festival of dignity for my country.

In both I glory, though forgotten and neglected

Are my writings; I rejoice despite my long absence.

It is the lover’s way: when his beloved shuns him,

He makes of longing perfumes of affection for his beloved.

Ah, my anguish! It is as though my thoughts

Are at war with me, and are not children of mine.

    من بعدهنّ على البعاد أنادي

    They left me, yearning for Egypt, and bewitched me;

After their departure, I call across the distance.

Who will convey my feelings to my beloved homeland—

    Manifold—their dying swells my tally?

Like a plant neglected, then stirred to reach upward,

And grown, not killed by the injustice of foes.

And some souls are quenched by their own water,

While drought persists around their roots.

And some souls are poor and never grow rich,

Not ever; even when watered, they remain thirsty.

My thirst for my homeland is that of a tormented man

Who gave himself for it—not an unrestrained exploiter.

I left it when I was denied its loyalty,

And barred from guiding it with my sound judgment.

And I made my exile my lofty pulpit,

Like a lighthouse above all darkness.

While it choked on schemers who had wavered

For a lifetime, yet still remained among the masters.

Their thriving is enough to make me choose exile,

And their arrogance, to make me live in chains.

I was never one to accept humiliation meekly,

And my intellect [unclear fragment] is glory, and my heart my provision.

I shall live in the independence of my spirit, exiling

Myself if ever my peers betray me.

And leave my memory to history as a guide,

If this generation fails to grasp my struggle’s worth.

Blessed are you, republic, never debased

    Between feudalism and corruption.

Its watchword is consultation, its innermost core

The protection of rights and the dignity of individuals.

    بهما نمت وسمت أعز بلاد

    Your most precious heritage is unity and justice;

Through both, the mightiest lands have grown and risen.

    So cherish both; then celebrate

As much as you wish—or forgo the finery of festivals.
