The island of light greets us,

And spreads her bounty among us.

Her lights are her most joyous poems,

And her colors echo our songs.

Is that which inspires song in many forms.

I questioned her when I contemplated her,

About her love for madmen like me—

Those who belittled the wealth she holds

And exalted the light that communes with us.

So she laughed, then swayed gently, as

The garden laughs with sweet basil.

And she perfumed me, as she perfumes

    Lovers' dreams with light.

A faith for her people, who had never known

Before, any faith of their own but this.

Without it, despite the treasures they possess,

They would have been beggars—indeed, paupers.

    A smile fills their faces,

So you do not see the weepers weeping.

And even if they call to one another with a grievance,

The complainers do not end up complaining.

The breaths of this light, when they spread,

    Made the afflicted carefree.

    Enchantment there greeting us.

For I am the poet whose art

    Creates measures for light,

In many forms, upon suffering humankind.

The trees welcomed me in rapture,

With tongues of light, telling tales.

And behind some of them lay a paradise,

And some of it entices us with fire.

So my impression of her was that she

    Had concealed accursed jinn,

And that they, like me, through their appreciation

Of beauty, were at play and at prayer.

And the world, with its wonders,

And its goodness, is but the work of our hands.
