Founder of the state whose might is feared,

And whose buildings have surpassed the summit of the world,

And whose principles still embrace lofty ideals,

    And whose spirit holds enduring virtues;

And where the free discern their model,

    And recognize her aspirations as their own;

And where all the skies are alive,

Like the peoples made happy within her.

Each has a vibrant, harmonious home,

And a dignity that has never been illusion or sham.

Even the birds sang in their refuges,

In rapture beyond what their songs conveyed.

Even the beasts whose roaming grounds are erased

By hostility moved gently through her open spaces.

Even nature throughout her reaches was a home

To divinity, in colors for the beholder.

Today we recognize your radiant day of birth,

Though you are veiled, through the legacies we keep alive.

Father of the land where beauty lives,

Its fragrance renewed, flowing through her daisies,

And in the adorned beauty of her towering trees,

And in the free singer among her turtledoves,

And in all her reaches, as though within her

    Your gracious memory were held sacred and deified;

And in all her principles that spread—

Principles that sent diverse nations swaying.

O you adopted by virtues unsullied

By baseness—and they gloried in adopting you!

You made your illustrious life-story a guide

For pioneers, who drank deep from its shining stars.

O leader of the great revolution, and its nurturer,

    Until it became a blaze that annihilated its foes;

And you who seized victory while the days turned away,

And the foe persisted in belittlement and derision.

You believed in truth until you were truth made man,

And in piety, till it became a faith for her people.

And when she escaped the tyrant's harm, having won

Her dignity, you were a helmsman watching over her.

And still you remain, O father, though asleep apart from your children

And their mother; they never slumber in their praise of you.

Far be it from you! Death immortalizes the free,

And exalts principles and brings them to life.

And thus the life-story of heroes is an epic:

Eternity is its poet, and Time its narrator.
