Songstress of the East, since there came to us

Your whisper, peace has sung for us.

In light, in fragrance, we were made to sway

By your sweet and lovely breaths.

You did not grant the lovers a dream,

But more than they hoped for and more than they were.

The universe around us is song,

And every star, for us, a violin.

As though magic had endowed it

    With all that tenderness creates.

O you who came to take pleasure for a while,

May you be well—and art and eloquence too.

Near you, there was no exile,

Nor the suffering of those who suffered.

For God's sake, be generous to my heart

With a breath from you that can be sensed.

And sing a poem for consolation,

That may be preserved in eternity's hearing.

Time turned against me for half a day,

So people were laid bare to me and stood revealed.

O you who turn away from us,

Return, for time has come round again.
