لعلّ جميع هذا الكون حولي

Perhaps this whole universe around me

Consists of symbols, behind which lies the meaning of God.

أتابعها فتشعرني جديدا

أتابعها فتشعرني جديدا

كأن لها انتباها لانتباهي

كأن لها انتباها لانتباهي

I follow them, and they make me aware of something new,

As though they were attentive to my attention.

وتلك عبادتي الكبرى إذا ما

وتلك عبادتي الكبرى إذا ما

عبدت وليس تمتمة الشفاه

عبدت وليس تمتمة الشفاه

And that is my supreme worship, whenever

I worship—not the muttering of lips.

أضلّي للجمال ولا أصلي

أضلّي للجمال ولا أصلي

كمن جعلوا الصلاة من الملاهي

كمن جعلوا الصلاة من الملاهي

[I pray] to beauty, but I do not pray

Like those who have made prayer a pastime.

فلا تقطع عليّ تأملاتي

فلا تقطع عليّ تأملاتي

وإن طالت فليس لها تناهى

وإن طالت فليس لها تناهى

So do not interrupt my meditations,

And even if they last long, they have no end.

وخذ عنها التصوف والتجلي

وخذ عنها التصوف والتجلي

فما كانا بتعفير الجباه

فما كانا بتعفير الجباه

And draw from them mysticism and divine unveiling,

For neither lies in rubbing foreheads in dust.

وما الرب المذل الخلق ربا

وما الرب المذل الخلق ربا

ولا المتجبر العاتي المباهي

ولا المتجبر العاتي المباهي

And a lord who humiliates creation is no lord,

Nor is the tyrannical, insolent boaster.
