O you bound for Egypt in pride and joy,

Congratulations! Egypt is none other than the mother of homelands,

the mother of civilization, whose infancy was nothing

but the proud achievements of artist and human being.

Each person has a homeland in which he takes pride,

and Egypt, however independent he may be, is his second homeland.

She has solemn covenants binding upon the world,

for she has so often bestowed kindness upon the world.

You are her dutiful son; let no rank make you forget

your duty to her—nor the turning of the ages.

And you, who are counted a pillar in your specialty,

and a creator of the strengths of her generation of builders:

teach, and teach, for no good comes to our nation

except through knowledge; knowledge is two lights.

And kiss Egypt’s soil for me, bowing in ardent love,

and take my heart from me as part of my offering.

    كذاك خلقك يوم اليأس أحياني

    Knowledge like yours nourished me and gave me life;

likewise, your character revived me on the day of despair.

I do not say farewell; rather I say: “And Ali

in the homeland of the sun whispered to me and called me.”

O you whose humility is the hallmark of your wisdom,

and whose worth surpasses any appraisal or title,

and you, from whose company I have long been kept:

you are surely nearer my heart than anyone close at hand.

A pledge binds you to guide the youth of the Nile

to truth, if a devil’s fraud betrays them.

    فاصدع بها الباطل المستأسد الجاني

    Indeed, courage is the noblest of your qualities;

so shatter falsehood with it, lion-fierce and criminal.

There is no good in knowledge when cowardice becomes its master,

for knowledge rises through knowledge, without power.

This is a greeting from one forsaken and far from home,

and a bouquet of my feelings and my melodies.

I have found no one but you gifted enough to bear it

to Egypt, when the Nile’s fidelity whispered to me.

Nor have I found a genius more worthy of my tribute,

nor any idealism more worthy of my faith.

So live for your people—nay, for all humankind,

and return to your people a treasure that will not perish.
