O people, why do you commit suicide?

And why do you let the criminal escape?

And why do you toy with danger,

instead of firm resolve to attain your goal?

The self-sacrificing fighter is the free man who

creates justice when justice has vanished,

not one who burns his own glories

that brought him joy, as though they were a despised dream.

Do you deem paradise fit for flames,

while the evildoer tyrannizes at ease?

    Enough for you is the fire in which you suffer;

you suffer amid manifold torments of Saqar.

Enough for you are the oppressors among your kin—indeed,

enough for you are the oppressors among all humankind.

Then why do you let the criminal escape?

And why, in despair, do you commit suicide?

Abandon despair and hasten to battle

    against the oppressors—indeed, against fate.

Never has an unbowed people fallen, one that will not deem

    accepting humiliation a forgivable sin.

It rejects delusion and refuses to have over it

guardians drawn from calves and cattle.

It rejects tyranny, and its faith spurns

    prayers to tyrants and stone.

    Its pride—indeed, its sustenance—is freedom,

in which it lived, rose high, and strode with pride.

No submission, whatever its form, nor

a revolt of despair, nor an ugly aftermath.

And when it rises, from its uprising

dawn breaks when the night grows dense.
