O my scars, be patient, O my scars,

And forget the cares of my grievous yesterday.

O daughters of wounds, your kin are my enemies,

And they have left you behind despite my gray hair.

In my heart they wreaked havoc; then in my mind

They thronged in the thick of wars.

The wounds left you victims, like me,

Like the blaze in the sky after sunset.

Indeed, this blaze is the scars of wounds

From a beloved; for the sun is the beloved's secret.

And the sky and I are two persons who have

Become adversaries after the stab of sunset.

I may sing, yet my song is nothing but

My tears—and at times my blood, which coursed through my love verse.

And like a consumptive, what I cough up into my

Verse is my life, with every bloodstained melody.

And the body's wounds heal, but not

The wounds that have lodged in the folds of hearts.
