O Abu Jarir, against my will my hand writes

this condolence, while my pen weeps, faltering.

Nor are my condolences in verse mere courtesy,

for your grief is part of my grief and my pain.

We are all bewildered, riders in a caravan

journeying from the remotest nothingness to nothingness.

Each has his role, and all are an experiment

with which life toys, in wakefulness and dreams.

Nothing remains but memory—if it survives.

And how many nations have passed away, grieving for nations!

Hopes have enslaved us, mocking us,

and set us loose, though we were not freed from the bridles.

Take my tear, my friend, as some consolation,

and mingle your abundant tears with it, and lay no blame.

This life and this death have never parted,

like twins in the lot of all humankind.

It is as though these grasses were our brothers,

and their lifespan matched ours in length and antiquity.

And reason was only a guest in our companionship with

this existence, and was never severed from number.

Scoff, then, my friend, however much you weep blood,

as I wept through my satire when I gave my blood.

Scoff—you are the leader of satire in a literature

that lives, free of death and decrepitude.

Scoff until the universe completes its cycle

upon life, and afterward we go on in darkness.
