My brother Habib, I am grateful for your kindnesses,

In your abundant affection or in your overflowing gentleness.

You asked after me—my thanks—while they did not:

These crowds for whose sake I lose sleep.

Many a gathering of yours I love, and it gladdens me

With the meanings of light and twilight it contains.

And I recite poetry as flames, and you make them

Like pure water when you listen amid my burning anguish.

You have matured in years and mind, just as have

These stars in inspiration and radiance.

And you remain young beyond my imaginings,

And a mine of radiant literature and moral character.

And people are of two kinds: one who gives, whose only reward

    Is ingratitude, and who does good, only to be sucked dry by leeches;

And another, whose form crowds out thought,

As beauty and bulls jostle on the roads.

How often, if I spent an hour in delight

With you, I would return newly created in my character.

And I will never neglect to renew its rapture,

Just as I jealously guard my faith and my creed.
