It pains me to find the bereaved—

A man of letters whose two robes brim with hope,

And whose presence is filled with a true light,

As though his guidance were what heaven holds.

Does he do good to life and to all creatures,

Only to be forsaken, tormented, or wronged?

And whence comes consolation amid calamities,

While misery clamors through our world?

And we invent happiness in proud defiance,

For our dignity—yet defiance avails nothing.

    وفيمَ الوهمَ أو فيمَ الرياء

    Slaves, we imagine masters among ourselves;

And why this delusion, or why this pretense?

And none but the fates are rulers:

They elude us, and cunning deceives us,

Over a matter that has bewildered minds:

The existence of the worlds, or annihilation.

All that we encounter and hope for is alike,

    Just as electricity contains forms.

For in the folds of continuance lies our annihilation,

And in the folds of annihilation lies our continuance.

Despite the calamity, O Abu Raja,

Be patient when patience is redemption.

If indeed the martyr drowned, then we are drowned

More grievously, with neither hope nor deliverance.
