Is this the artist we hear as art,

and not the one who lived on earth and displayed artistry?

And does this ether hold, across the expanse,

songs that, unlike their maker, will never meet burial?

They drift over the ears, wandering free,

and sometimes meet the listening mind and the ear,

as the trees listen, lost in reverie,

among them, one whispered intimately, and another sang.

And the legacy of genius is not a note,

but its echo, which creates the unseen and the universe.

As though humankind's children, in their lives, were not

children of the earth, or as though life had no meaning,

and people's existence lay beyond their death:

some of them live on, while most perish.

And these forms are nothing but experiments,

and the being that endures is only the most radiant ideal,

setting nature's breaths rippling with enchantment,

and bestowing them on people as its loveliest melodies.

Whether we heard them aloud or in a whisper,

in silence or inwardly—for you were them as art.

And this magic was not the rhythm of an hour,

but immortality, which I envisioned in tangible form.

It resounded through the skies, while the universe stood reverent,

and the reverberation never ends, in perception or in thought.

And it stirred the scattered rainclouds: one passes

over a tear, or is present, its feeling drawn from us.

As though the sweet drizzle were the yearnings of companions

who rose aloft and greeted us, having poured out the raincloud.

We all listened intently, wasting not a moment,

as though we doubted we would see safety afterward,

as though we rejected life as the beating of our hearts,

and that we merged into immortality and what it yielded.

And we do not hear the melodies as notes played in sequence,

but they are dreams emanating from us.

    Opposites united until they seemed

a family upon which art bestowed a share of its own stature.

    As though gracious brotherhood lived in the shade of its spell;

then, when it ended, we began to see injustice afterward.

And we had broken free from relentless prisons

in our bodies for a while; when it ended, we returned.

So, oh, if only I could become a wandering melody,

and pay the universe both lavish interest and the debt!

And oh, if only I could exchange my life for one to come—

for these wars of oppression grind us to pieces.
