I sacrifice by departing; one like me makes sacrifices,

When inescapable duty calls or inspires.

And far be it from me to forget my reverence as I kissed

Your earth, like a sinner seeking forgiveness.

Ever since I crossed thousands of leagues, indignant

At oppression and oppressors, sating them with censure.

For my heart breathed in fragrance and drew inspiration from other things.

And those whose slumber you stole lost patience,

For your night is light, like your knowledge, never effaced.

So you showered me with love and renewed refinement for me.

Among those who have known a manifestation or aspect of your beauty.

Teaching the free how to stand firm,

And making all their dreams waking reality.

My separation from you keeps me sleepless, as though I were

Going into exile, not to a spacious paradise.

Supplying my joyful soul with faith.

Nor from waning affection, like one who seeks profit,

And amid its violence, battle may give birth to peace.

Their reproaches, nor time harrying me with counsel.

And I shall slaughter sorrow as a sacrifice, without faltering,

Even if my bewilderment has driven me from your heights,

And my livelihood too, yet my heart is attached to you—or has become so.
