I meet you in my first beloved homeland,

and though you are near me and have not journeyed,

you are no stranger, nor am I estranged from it:

for in every house within it I glimpse my home.

So accept a greeting from my faithful heart:

it comes from Egypt’s rays, unchanged,

though it holds, from my feelings’ tears,

a melody melting toward the first beloved,

and though it holds, from my Arab spirit’s yearning,

a broader melody, and from my love and hope.

Hail, Isa, wherever you may be; for you only

find what the generous pioneer has planted.

In every land, Arabhood feels rapture

at meeting Aktham or meeting al-Akhtal.

And in every corner of zeal and guidance

for Muslims, you lodge in the finest abode.

O one who captivated the generation, unopposed,

with his heart and his radiant speech!

O you who gave from the heart, making sacrifices,

to ward off injustice and uplift one who hopes!

O you of shining deeds—their number

is beyond reckoning, even if they come before the beholder!

O master of literature, sublime in artistry,

and you whose noble, consummate voice resounds!

Look before you: you will find only hopes,

messengers from the wounded, neglected people.

And surely you are more discerning—indeed, wiser—in listening,

or speaking or acting, than my words can convey.

This is the greeting of one who loves and trusts you,

looking toward the dawn of a lovelier age,

until he kisses Egypt’s soil, welcoming

you once again with finer verse,

and ushers the epic of immortality, aglow

with the splendors of the past, into the future.
