I consoled myself, yet not out of grief

Over my inward torments and my illnesses.

For long ago I accepted what made me suffer,

And I have remained the same, finding it sweet, content.

And how often I shunned wealth as it sought me,

And I have wept neither over the future nor the past.

    فإن هويتُ ففقري بين أنقاضي

    My only wealth is my own self, if I raise it high;

But if I fall, my poverty lies among my ruins.

And my glory lies not in my art but in my feeling,

Which has kept itself free of folly in my aims.

If I live a human life, I am enriched by it,

And my heart alone has been the arbiter and judge.

And I care not how far a fool turns away

From me; but I care about my turning away from him.

And if I sink through baseness and greed,

Then neither my might nor my flashes will lift me.

Nor does a celebration honor me, too small to contain

The singers' praise, their hallowing and lifting me up.
