I am the embryo, and this earth has long been

My mother—how many billions she has cast forth!

Yet none of her children reached maturity save a small band,

Who were prophets, or the like of prophets.

And the day of my birth, whose appointed hour is awaited,

Is the day my art and writing reach completion.

One is born only when there bloom

One’s works, like the blossoms of gardens.

Without that, one has no life at all,

Even if one clothes oneself in morality and religion.

My life is measured by my radiant works, if they ripen,

And all other remembrance is of no avail to me.

And the day I perfect them is the day I am counted

Alive, born for immortality and empowerment.

    وإنما هي أحلامُ المجانينِ

    The body is nothing, and the individual has no worth;

Such worth exists only in the dreams of madmen.

And only the mind’s legacy, from all eternity,

Lives on; all else is among the sacrificial offerings.
