    Houses cloaked in treasured antiquity,

    scattered among trees and fields.

I gaze at them, but their gaze passes me by

    toward shimmering pools and shores.

And some have passionately befriended the brambles,

as though in an embrace that never fades.

I sat in the meadow, spellbound, watching them,

but they paid me no heed after forgetting me.

    I am the stranger who hopes for their care;

why, then, are they distracted from my fondest hopes?

Do sparrows and crows bring them joy,

while a human being's longings bring them none?

No wonder, if the wires are thronged

with them at prayer, like monks.

And the sun bestows splendor from her rays,

as though her radiance were the Divine Judge's forgiveness.

Or, through my wandering far from the sight of them,

has my devotion to them come close to denial?

And has he who sought their companionship grown more worthy of them,

in every season, heedless of any measure?

“Beware of the sun,” they said. “She is a danger,

and kissing her brings the scorching of flames.”

So I said, “How welcome! For fire is in my yearning,

so I care not if it blazes in my body.”

    فكيف أحذرها في فرط غيماني

    Indeed, I left New York to worship her;

how, then, should I beware of her, with my thirst so great?

No tree has complained of her, nor any singing bird,

    nor blossoms from April's legacy;

nor have the insects dancing there complained,

as though they were art and radiance at once.

How, then, can I complain and fear her blaze,

when the sun is my soul, my inspiration, and my body?

As though I complain and fear her blaze,

while the sun is my soul, my inspiration, and my body.

It is as though Akhenaten, when he glorified her,

stood in my stead in my love and my offering.

As though I were the sea, in waves that woo her,

or that I were grass in the dreams of one half-asleep.

And various flocks came, speaking to me,

flocks of birds that had answered my melodies.

Even the stillness around me has a language

that echoed in the recesses of my second self,

when the sky, proud of its blueness,

vied with the sea in meaning and colors.

From all this and that I draw riches,

as though my gazes were an artist's canvas.

I live in their midst, sustained by a little of their breath,

and I have forgotten my torments and my sorrows,

just as I have returned to what was lost of my life,

    renewed in fresh, radiant bliss.

And I fill my eye with the colors of its wine,

as though I drank the cups of Ridwan.

Until, when night arrived in its stillness,

and the full moon tickled my feelings with its radiance,

I composed this poem of mine from its delights,

and from the delights of my gentle, blissful day:

the soul's gift, from a bliss one lives for,

to a friend I care for, and who cares for me.

Years have passed since the day of our parting,

yet we have not been parted in soul or body.

For we are poets in our mysticism,

and we have risen above the limits of possibility.
