Buthayna, I cannot accept farewell, although I would

gladly accept my blood being shed before you.

To Egypt I go, if I leave you, a dying man,

yet there I have none of a mummy's good fortune.

Then torment me beside you; for me that is

bliss; do not heed reproach or complaint.

For in Egypt their tombs revive the dead,

but for one like me, death is like living in affliction.

And where is my way, Jamil?

Is your turning away from me part of love?

Though the world betray me, I remain faithful

to love, forever like a tender mother.

And at the Resurrection I find someone other than you as my deliverer,

and pure love alone is my intercessor.

I live by the creed of love, despite my estrangement,

in anguish, until I repel my foes.

Then free me from my torment, my beloved,

and do not send me to perish, a wanderer.

    ولو ماتَ أحياهُ الغرامُ جديدا

    When the sun casts its light, it is not lost in vain;

even if it dies, passion revives it anew.

    God knows that I

would sacrifice myself for you, not consent to your martyrdom.

    Yes, my Buthayna,

my reproaches are a disgrace when you are my deity.

She is sacred within my heart, and her love

is the perfume of living blood and a dream of lips.

But, O beloved Buthn, what is it

that keeps you from thinking, this instant, of being with me?

And if you wished, I would place my soul in poems,

as colors upon the sand, and set them loose, intoxicated.

And they would be for this beauty, or among mounts

bound for Egypt, where the sand has blossomed and smiled,

and where the waters of the Nile flow dancing,

one part courting another, contented and free.

    Jamil, enough, enough!

Can we rescue with dreams a love of ours that is lost?

And how can love be lost in the breast of a lover

who soared above the meaning of creation in spirit and radiance?

And how, when my pledge is like the breeze that passed

across generations as a hymn of immortality?

Have you forgotten that I am the spouse of one who will never elude me,

even if I lived on Mars, above the mountains?

For her sons are models of chivalry,

and her sons are more deserving of love.

I yearn for her, answering a call

sung by the beautiful, shimmering dawn,

perfumed by the breaths of Egypt and her Nile,

and shining with her inspiration, so precious to us.

Jamil, Jamil, have mercy, for I

    suffer torment and regrets.

Yet deprivation is sweeter to my soul

than disgrace, which a noble person's nature will not accept.

And deprivation may create a beautiful soul,

more beloved and, in love, more worthy of Jamil.

Farewell, my beloved; look, the sun has been bid farewell,

and my sorrows appear in the phantoms of sunset.

Farewell; nothing remains to me but a longing

that accompanies me until I meet my death.

And I see it around me as visions of anguish,

and melodies of sorrow, and a voice of madness.

Farewell, my passion; despair has become my guide,

though once it shunned me and was my adversary.

Farewell, as though we were created for separation,

and were dolls suffering in a villain's palm.

Farewell, my life; allow me a kiss

upon a foot whose footsteps my bliss follows.

Farewell, just before night; for night is harsh,

though you are a sun above all pitch-dark gloom.

Farewell, my beloved; I shall remain faithful

in my soul, as flowers are faithful to their tender planter.

For I am nothing but you, however we are carried

by the vicissitudes of a world that professes no faith.

Farewell, my beloved; let some of my tears

be yours, and hold back your precious, suffering tears.

Farewell; the hermitage of grief alone is my

consolation. Farewell, my angel and my human.

Farewell, my life; I shall always look

at you in the mirror of the sky, again and again.

    لعلَّ به معنىً لديكِ تَوارى

    And I shall whisper to every beauty surrounding me;

perhaps it holds a meaning hidden within you.
