أشعةُ شمسٍ تلكَ أم رجعُ أشعاري

يعودُ إلى قلبي بحبٍ وأسرار
Are those sunbeams, or the echo of my poems
Are those sun rays or is it my poetry
returning to my heart with love and secrets?
Returning to my heart with love and secrets?

And what are these fluttering particles filled with?
jewels, or are these sparks of my thoughts?
Gems or fantasies of my thoughts?

Yes, they dispersed from my fire and my light,
Yes, they are of my fire and light that scattered
having danced in the sun the dance of the debauched.
And danced playfully in the sun

They went toward the one I love and returned like
They went to my beloved and came back as if
a wine-seller's victim, after frolicking around me.
They had frolicked around me, veiled flirts

Then you are like me, little one—except that
So you are like me, little one, except
I am the burdened captive of my prison and my sins.
I am burdened, suffering my prison and shackles

And nothing is harsher than a conscience reproaching
And nothing is harsher than a weeping conscience
an innocent person; no tyrant's oppression has equaled it.
Though tyranny of the unjust be immense

I shall shuffle in these irons, atoning,
I will extravagate in these chains in penance
though once I walked in splendor among flowers.
When once I revelled amidst flowers

And how far I am from finding ease and contentment!
Never will I find happiness and contentment
You will find them, once you have atoned through imprisonment for your sin.
You will find reprisal for your conceit in your sentence

You received a punishment for pride, decreed by
A just reward for spurning love
the law of love when I turned away from your love.
When I turned away from your love

النورُ فيهِ الآنَ من ظِلِّ الشجر
Look toward the little window; you will find the light carrying me to you.
Look through the crevice where light carries me to you
The light now holds, from the trees' shade,
The light now has shades of trees in it

images that elude me and dance upon the lifeless wall.
Phantoms tease me, dancing on the blank wall
And it is as though my fate has stumbled over these shadows,
As if these shadows have discovered my missteps

بَادِر إذن وهَلمَّ يا أملي إلى حسن الفرار
so they fell, stained like my hopes with the despairing one's humiliation.
And fell smeared, like my hopes, in the gloom of the recluse
Hasten, then, and come, my hope, toward a graceful escape.
So escape, my hope, escape the ugliness

the paths take me, when love incites others against me.
The paths lead me when love tempts me

For there are my voice, my breaths, and my eye,
That is my voice, my breath, my gaze
betraying my heart and so delivering me to torment.
That wanders in my heart and tortures me

How can I escape? Awake, naïve one! Rather, it is folly
How to escape, O simpleton, is nonsense
not to flee, even if I lose my hopes.
That I should not escape, even if I lose my hopes

No living person accepts oppression when his feelings hold
Injustice cannot dwell in living conscience
the secret of life; nor does he consent to shackles.
The secret of life, and it accepts no shackles

My revenge is not with a sword I would unsheathe
but with the reed pen, which the assistant fears.
But with integrity, feared by the unjust

Patience, then, Ibn Abdus—for tomorrow
Patience, O son of Abduss! Tomorrow
you shall gulp poison when you meet Ibn Zaydun.
You will sip the poison when you meet the son of Zaydun

You will sip the matchless poisonous poetry
whose mockery makes stones and weepers laugh.
Mockingly making stones laugh and weep

O you who lord it over the artist, oppressing him
O you who presume to subdue the artist, exhaust him
with money and falsehood—you do not know the life-givers.
With money and lies, you know not the eulogists

However far away they go, distance causes no separation;
However remote, distance cannot separate us
rather, distance makes their closeness firmer.
Rather, absence intensifies proximity

O you who stole the beautiful rose, thinking it
wealth—shame on you! You do not know fragrant plants.
Property, you erred! You know not the winds

You were dubbed the mouse; those who described you did you no justice,
You were named a rat, unfairly labelled
for the mouse toils, oppressed and cheated,
The rat toils oppressed and duped

Adorning theft of minds an embellishment

None steals the rose but a sinner, a wicked one
whose heart has embraced neither kindness nor faith.
Whose heart embraced no gentleness or faith

And the wealth plunderer in crime has a status
higher than the plunderer who annihilates our hopes.
Higher than one who pilfers our dreams

So hurry, my love, do not prolong my torment
Indeed, I await our meeting in longing,
I longingly await our union

A longing that transcended depictions
in feeling and meaning, in words and explanation.
In senses, meanings, words and elucidations

For people since created are foes of the eminent
