    Wound upon wound—have mercy, Jilliq!

You have been burdened with what weakens mountains and destroys them.

Patience, lioness of the East! Every calamity

wears away before noble patience and grows threadbare.

Have you forgotten the oppressors' fire, and a convulsion

that shook the age, as though Rome were burning?

Reckless, it was unleashed, its blaze planted

in history's chamber by a reckless fool.

Then it strode, smashing a treasure with its right hand,

and pilfering another with its left, stealing it away.

It went mad; its strength was shattered, its wildness tamed

by the utter madness of your ardent youth.

    Iron met an Umayyad ardor

that neither dons rust nor yields to the hammer.

O framer of yesterday's constitution, patterned on your character—

it holds no crookedness, nor is it narrow.

A system of consultation and a rightly guided rule:

both hold civilization's refinement and reason.

    يَبقى الكِتابُ وَلَيسَ يَبقى المُلحَقُ

    Do not fear what they have appended to its text;

the text endures; the appendix does not.

O glorious dead one, from these rhymes a sigh

flows, and from them a tear wells up.

    أَفَأَنتَ مُنتَظِرٌ كَعَهدِكَ شَيِّقُ

    And I have indeed sent them both to you as a poem;

are you waiting, as ever, full of longing?

I mourn our brief nights and a companionship

whose rain-cloud has begun to surge and flash.

I will not speak to you of the world, for perhaps

a drowned man loathes talk of bitter brine.

Life is fashioned from poison: its food,

its drink, and the air breathed within it.

People live between its slow poison and its swiftly fatal kind,

not knowing which of its two poisons they were made to drink.

As for the friend, with his poison he gave you

what the blue-eyed foe would never give you.

    وَلِكُلِّ نَفسٍ مُدَّةٌ لا تُسبَقُ

    They sought you, with imminent death urging them on;

yet every soul has a term that cannot be forestalled.

When death aided the cunning of their snares,

they caught fast—as the cords of death catch fast.

    كَفَرَت مِمّا تَنتابُ مِنهُ وَتَطرُقُ

    A human serpent came by night to your bed;

she proved faithless to the very place from which she came and called.

O Fawz, there is Damascus, behind her black mourning-garb,

casting her eyes toward your place and gazing.

She remembered the nights of her full moon and turned,

hoping you might rise, that you might shine.

    Barada weeps beyond its banks,

and the poplars, their tresses loosened, bow their heads.

    يَجِدُ الهُمومَ خَلِيُّهُنَّ وَيَأرَقُ

    The birds throughout Dummar are wailing mourners;

even those once free of sorrow feel it now and lie awake.

And every speaker says to his evening companion:

Can a wearer of a necklace be trusted after this?

She loved beauty's dazzling displays, yet found

nothing in genius to be loved and adored.

So she went, her fingers like an addict's hand,

as though the poison in them were quicksilver.

If a decree of fate could be averted, she would have been repelled

by the stricken, anxious homeland, at the cost of its own life.

    لَولا القَضاءُ مِنَ السَماءِ لَما شَقَوا

    After you, judgment on earth made a family wretched;

but for heaven's decree, they would not have suffered.

    فَاِنظُر فُؤادَكَ هَل يَلينُ وَيَرفُقُ

    Hearts hardened against them and turned to stone;

look into your heart: will it soften and show compassion?

Those among whom you have taken lodging

have pardoned; none of them is angry or enraged.

They mocked the world, as it had mocked them,

and all attachment to its cords was severed.

O funeral for one of Abd Shams, whose like

is made and arrayed for the sun when it dies.

If earth's surface was too narrow for you, its belly

is narrower still for the mortal remains you leave behind.

When you gathered Syria from its farthest reaches,

the East came to console Syria for your loss,

weeping for a banner of Umayya's youth,

that guards the sanctuary of manifest truth and flutters.

    وَتَلَمَّستُهُ فَلَم تَجِدهُ الفَيلَقُ

    The fortresses felt their own forelocks, seeking it;

and I sought it, but the legion did not find it.

A pillar of leadership: when you seek his counsel,

he gives his view; ask him to speak, and he speaks.

Beneath him, the magic of eloquence nearly makes

the pulpits' wood thrill and burst into leaf.

O Fayha, where among your gardens is the rose

with which the world once fluttered and grew fragrant?

A heavenly rose, whose folds the ears discern,

and whose fragrance minds can sense and breathe.

Flowers' couches are branches; her throne

is a nation's hand, its brow, and the parting of its hair.

Who will convey from me to Jilliq's lion cubs

a saying that prevails over time and proves true?

By God—exalted be His majesty—by Muhammad,

by Jesus, by al-Ghazzi: do not divide!

The pasture may be spoiled for her sisters

by a sheep that strays from the flock and breaks away.
