Why do you smile at the world, when its ultimate end

Turns every lover aside, away from you?

And what room can you find in it, after it has allotted

You the narrowness of graves as your final abode?

How many a companion of earth's full moons has left them,

Unable to count the earth's crawling creatures he befriended!

And a delicate man, once hurt by his own thin shirt,

Has befriended worms, shrouds, and dust.

Life is not understood until it ends; then we see

Life's truth and falsehood through death's eye.

All truths admit the possibility of doubt,

Except death, which admits neither doubt nor misgiving.

And for all my knowledge and experience, I have seen nothing

As serious as death, nor as frivolous as what precedes it.

He has not died who left the world a great story,

Nor has he perished who fulfilled what was owed to glory.

Nor are they equal: the man whose memory is folded away with him,

And one who has gone, but whose goodness among people has not.

So if you pass through the world, pass as a noble man,

And do not pass like the multitude, as drifting dust.

For immortality is twofold: people's immortality after death

Through remembrance, and the immortality awaited with God.

I weep for Rifa'a; I weep for learning and letters.

I weep for nobility of character and the excellence now veiled.

I weep for the rhymes that spread like sunlight,

I weep for the inkwells, the pens, and the books.

    ابكى البلاغة ابكى بعدك العربا

    I weep for the conversations that flowed, all refinement;

I weep for eloquence; after you, I weep for the Arabs.

O son of him whose learning brought Egypt to life,

Your father was a father to the country's children.

You both came while the darkness of ignorance filled it,

Like the sun and the full moon—I do not call you shooting stars—

    Nurturing upright children for it,

And sending forth the state's finest defenders.

And among peoples, gratitude is more rightly and fittingly owed

To one who showers knowledge than to one who showers gold.

The bearers of death's news said, 'The best of noble men in parentage has died.'

I replied, 'If my Lord wills, the best of them in descendants, too.'

God does not demolish a house whose foundation is honor,

For which His hand, out of His bounty, has stretched a tent-rope.
