1. الِّلى يحب الجمال

    يسمح بروحه وماله

    Whoever loves beauty

    Gives freely of his life and wealth.

  2. قلبه إلى الحسن مال

    ما للعوازل وماله

    His heart has turned toward beauty;

    What have the reproachers to do with him?

  3. نام يا حبيبي نام

    سِهرت عليك العناية

    Sleep, my beloved, sleep.

    Providence has kept vigil over you.

  4. يا ريت تشوف في المنام

    دمعي وتنظر ضنايا

    If only you could see in your dreams

    My tears, and behold my suffering.

  5. الحب طير في الخمائل

    شفنا غرائب جنونه

    Love is a bird among the leafy groves;

    We have seen the marvels of its madness.

  6. حاكم بأمره وشايل

    على جناحه قانونه

    It rules by its own decree, and carries

    Its law upon its wing.

  7. تيجى تصيده يصيدك

    ومين سِلِم من حباله

    You come to catch it, and it catches you.

    And who has escaped its snares?

  8. وكل خالي مسيره

    يعذب الحب باله

    And everyone not in love will, in time,

    Have his mind tormented by love.

  9. يالِّلى مادُقت الغرام

    من العيون السلامه

    O you who have never tasted passion,

    Seek safety from those eyes.

  10. إسلم بروحك حرام

    دى عين تقيم القيامة

    Escape with your life—for pity's sake!

    This is an eye that brings on Judgment Day.

  11. الاسم عين وتلاقيها

    قدح وخمره وساقى

    An eye in name, yet you find it

    A goblet, wine, and a cupbearer.

  12. وسحبة الرمش فيها

    من بابل السحر باقي

    And in the sweep of its lashes,

    Magic from Babylon still lingers.
