Moving it only from one tent-rope to another.
Thus it did not swerve from the niche of Ali

And unto Whom He grants or deprives sovereignty over whom He wills

The caliph then succeeded by the next in line

But rather at why its building was delayed.

Their mother deserves all mothers as her ransom.

By God, they were unjust in breaking unity.
They did not do justice, by God, in that regard

These men—not others—besmirched
Of their fortune was a caliph fond of them
The reputation of Haydara's sons and brought it low.

Whose heart loved them and loved forgiveness.

Until God granted Fatima's household
The Ender of centuries decreed and ordained.

What their noble forefathers had died without attaining.

An occasion does not fail he who brings it
Until, when people said it would never fulfill it, it did.
Nor is occasion deferred if it comes

Nor can its appointed hour be delayed once it arrives.

His pursuers never ceased, nor did he slacken.

In worldly manners a model for those who emulate.

Al-Mu'izz ennobled kingship, and

His days became ornaments of faith and worldly life.

With provisions, equipment, and abundant wealth.

Neither the Ikhshidids owned it, preventing it
By the death of Kafur, who had protected it.

It was vulnerable to him, unfortified
Nor did al-Abbas's sons protect its bounds.

How many days in Egypt can compensate?

Order was set right with his arrival
How many commendable days he had in Egypt!

The pillar of sovereignty had leaned, then stood upright.

And people knew security and prosperity.

When you mention his two palaces therein
And here is Cairo, which he built.

The upper Nile and its Nubians submitted
Sham surrendered, and before it
To the Fatimids and offered tribute.

Save Damascus which was seized
Of Hamdan's house, horsemen of battle.

دِمَشقُ لِلشِيعَةِ تُضمرُ القِلى
Except Damascus, seized by force; it continued—
The House came to Fatima's dynasty
Damascus—to harbor hatred for the Shi'a.
And the Reign transferred over to them, at peace
وَأَتتِand came الدارُthe abode بَنيto the sons of فاطِمَةٍFatima

So in them the sermon and the mention
And the House passed to them and hastened their way.

Until when royal authority manifested its accord
With remembrance and prayer in the purest places.

And fortune strung together Jawhar's wishes,

Dazzling in glory, vying with the morning light.

The two palaces welcomed a day whose like
The treasuries of the Maghreb in his train
The valley had neither heard of nor seen.
As if the treasuries of God competed

The Nile thus met its own likeness,
The Son of the Messenger of God being more plentiful in bounty
And flooded people with bounty and abundance.
And if his stream exceeded, the Nile envied his hand

The son of God's Messenger had a more generous palm;
When this earth was barren in the arms of another
His bounty healed whenever the Nile wounded.
He came and lifted drought from it and sufficed

The land grew barren within this one's confines,
Al-Aziz constantly craved
While that one banished its drought and provided enough.

Baghdad, while destiny barred what he desired.

If only hopes knew a limit within the soul!

Sovereignty passed: it was a transfer
Anzar ran its ruinous course
From the summit of glory to the zenith of greatness.

In Egypt Al-Aziz, if aroused, his rule
As the staff followed the little staff.

And shod them with the rubies of battle.

From riding grounds to the heat of war's mill.

And its night ended like nights of union.

Hopeful petitioners returned with gifts.

Al-Mamun he endured from Fatima's house
And the people of Moses, came a spark and a share.

Destroying when enraged, building when raving.
