    We would ransom him, that awaited visitor,

    He appeared to the world, a wondrous sight.

    His glad tidings shake the mountains,

    As rapture sways the side of one enraptured.

    فَمِنّا الكُؤوسُ وَمِنهُ الحَبَب

    And he sweetens the seas with his radiance;

    So the cups are ours, and the bubbles his.

    A beacon for the rugged heights whenever he rises,

    A beacon for the plains whenever he turns back.

    He came to us from the sea in a little boat,

    Of silver, its oars of gold.

    وَفِرعَونُ لَو حَمَلَتهُ الشُهُب

    So we said: Solomon, had he not died;

    And Pharaoh, had the shooting stars borne him;

    وَيوسُفُ لَو أَنَّهُ لَم يَشِب

    And Chosroes, his fire still unquenched;

    And Joseph, had he not grown gray.

    But far from it! They were not crowned with radiance,

    Nor was their throne above the clouds.

    He rose above the water, between those clouds

    And the mountains and the lofty hills.

    So he is neither hidden nor visible,

    Nor unveiled—no, nor veiled.

    And he is neither staying nor departing,

    Nor far away, nor drawing near.

    He hid half of himself amid the clouds,

    While half remained visible upon a mountain.

    He renews it—a miracle from days gone by—

    And recalls the birth of the best of the Arabs.
