وَمِنand from هَذَينِthese two كُلُّall الحادِثاتِevents
We were created for life and for death,
We were created for life and for death
and from these two arise all events.
And from these two derive all occurrences

Whoever is born lives and dies, as though
Whoever is born lives and dies as though his phantom
his shadow had never passed through creation.
Had not passed among the existents
وَمَهدُand the cradle المَرءِof a person فيin أَيديthe hands of الرَواقيwomen reciting charms

And one's cradle in the hands of women reciting charms
A man's cradle is in the hands of the mourning women
is like one's bier amid wailing women.
Like his bier amid the wailing ladies
وَماand not سَلِمَwas spared الوَليدُthe newborn مِنِfrom اِشتِكاءٍsuffering

The newborn is not spared suffering;
No newborn is free from defect
can the long-lived, then, be free of harm?
So how can the aged be free from affliction?

This world is a battle in which we are
This life is battle, we therein
targets for the sword and spear.
Are objects of swords and lances

And everyone is driven into it,
And all mankind is driven unto it
as the coward is driven to stand firm.
As the coward was driven unto standing his ground

We are terrified time and again, then shot
We are terrified however terrified until we are shot
with an arrow coming from the hand of fate.
With an arrow from the hand of Destiny coming

May God's blessing, O Timzar, reward
O Taimuzar, may God's prayers recompense
your dust for recitation and prayer,
Your soil instead of reciting and praying

And for ninety years you were
like the beneficent, virtuous women.
Like the virtuous, righteous ladies

You were kind to the believing women, and each said:
You excelled the faithful women, so each
Perhaps you are the mother of believing women.
Said, perhaps you are the Mother of the Faithful

And among the virtues were some that endured;
In virtues some persisted
and today you are all that endures.
While today you are all of the persisting

The kings adopted you, and among them you held
The kings adopted you and you were to them
the place of sons or daughters.
Like sons or daughters

They shelter your manifold virtues
They shaded diverse glories from you
and give refuge to piety and good deeds.
And practiced piety and righteousness

They did not acquire you at a market, but
They did not buy you in a market, but
beneath the shadow of spears and keen-edged blades.
Beside the shade of the spear and the tents

You appeared to them in Morea, ten years old,
You cooed to them in the voice of Morat daughter of ten
while death's sword was among the warriors' heads.
While the sword of death was in the tyrant's grasp

So you became quarry for them and for the Merciful,
Thus you were to them and the Merciful a prey
and the central jewel in the necklace of Muslim women.
And a link in the bond of Muslim women
تَبِعتِyou followed مُحَمَّداًMuhammad مِنfrom بَعدِafter عيسىJesus

You followed Muhammad after Jesus
for your own good, in your earliest years.
For your excellence in your early years

Thus the two parents were guidance and piety,
So the parents were guidance and piety
and the offspring were these miracles.
And the child was these miracles

Ahmad, you would be the best of mothers

You passed beyond the proud slave women
You surpassed the proudly child-bearing
to him who is the pride of tribes and tongues,
To the pride of tribes and languages

and the keenest of those who fathom time through experience,
And deadliest killer of Time's news
and the most patient of those who endure calamities.
And most patient enduring one of calamities

It is as though Time and I are in combat,
It is as though I and Time are in combat
contending, turn for turn, in the arena of life.
Rivaling on the battleground of life

I fear when the nights grow heavy,
I fear when the nights grow heavy
and dread the swift coming of calamities.
And dread the lightly visiting fates

My caution is no use to me, yet
But my caution avails me naught, rather
I refuse to see them strike by surprise.
Disdain that I see them taking me by surprise
أَمَأمونٌis one safe? مِنَfrom الفَلَكِthe firmament العَواديassaults

Can one be safe from the firmament's assaults,
Is one who steps describing circles with his feet
while its compass traces circles?
Safe from the returning heavenly sphere?

Reflect: do you see anything but nets
Consider, do you see anything but the hunting nets
cast around you by the days?
Of days cast around you?

And had the directions been created seven in number,
Had the directions been created seven
death would have been the seventh direction.
Death would be the seventh direction

May the bier be safe—not for love of it, but
Accursed is the bier! Not out of love, but
for your sake, O heaven of noble deeds.
For your sake, O heaven of the venerated

though they went off with my patience and composure.
Though they walked with my patience and deliberation

For before it I had never seen Mars laid low,
Never had I seen Mars cast down before it
nor heard of the burial of shining heavenly bodies.
Nor heard of the burial of metals

There I stood, asking you to linger,
There I stood to ask you for consolation
and clinging to your qualities and to the stone.
And hold to the noble deeds and nobility

And I gaze into your dust, then lower my eyes,
And look into your soil, then withdraw my eyes
as a proud man closes his eyes upon a mote.
As the streaming one withdraws from the mote

And remember of your life what transpired
and it was but from one morning to the next.
From morning to morning
