To Muhammad’s son I dedicate my book;
To Muhammad's son I dedicate my book.
for even a little offering may be presented to the noble.
And a small gift may be offered to the generous.
وماand not أهدىI offer لهto him إلاexcept فؤاديmy heart
وماand what بينwithin الفؤادthe heart منof الصميمthe innermost essence
And I dedicate to him nothing but my heart,
And I offer him nothing but my heart,
and whatever the heart has voiced from its very core:
And the innermost essence within that heart,

وماand what أوعيتI stored منof وحيinspiration قديمancient
the sowing of my childhood and the harvest of my youth,
And the plantings of my childhood and the harvest of my youth,
all I have treasured of ancient inspiration,
And what I have stored of ancient inspiration,
وماand what حاولتI strove for منof عصرan age عظيمgreat

and every lofty purpose I pursued
And what I have striven for—a great age
through literature for the glorious homeland.
Of letters for the great homeland.

And Muhammad was more faithful and more watchful
And Muhammad was more devoted and more attentive
over these pearls than an orphan’s guardian.
To these pearls than the keeper of a peerless pearl.

For poetry is the sweet basil of lofty honors,
And poetry is indeed the patrons' sweet basil,
and the solace of everyone possessed of sound taste.
And the solace of all who possess sound taste.

Never have kings drunk, or asked again for,
And kings have never drunk, nor asked to have again,
a cup like this from such a boon companion.
A cup like this from this boon companion.
