To God's Arafat, O finest visitor,

God's peace be upon you at Arafat.

And on the day you turn toward the House, radiant,

handsome in the glow of joy and in your features.

On every horizon in the Hijaz are angels

    bearing God's greetings and blessings.

When the kings' pale camels are urged on by song, they

are the finest camel-drivers for yours in the wilderness.

At the door is Gabriel the trustworthy, in his palm

messages wafting the grace of the All-Merciful.

And in the radiant Kaaba, a corner welcomes

a Kaaba for seekers and a pillar for supplicants.

And the waterspout poured no water; rather,

it showered you with reward and mercies.

And Zamzam flows before your eyes in springs

    gushing from honey-sweet al-Kawthar.

And they pelt Iblis the accursed; he burns,

and your foe too, in fires from the stoning pebbles.

Ta-Ha greets you in his pure resting places,

and knows the obstacles you have struggled through.

    وَرُبَّ ثَناءٍ مِن لِسانِ رُفاتِ

    And the Rightly Guided speak well of you;

and many a tribute comes from a tongue of crumbled remains.

Religion belongs to You, O Lord of the pilgrims; You gathered them

to a House pure in its precincts and courtyards.

I see people of many kinds; from every place

they have reached You from exile and dispersion.

They are equal: no distinction of lineage exists

before You, nor do their ranks differ.

A forehead has bowed to You in the sacred dust,

to which even the proudest of foreheads submits.

radiant as the full moon, lofty as al-Suha,

yet lowered before truth and at prayer.

And my Lord, even if You placed Salih's she-camel

at Your servant's service, she would not be among the docile.

And my Lord, is there a car or an airplane,

so that distant deserts and wildernesses may draw near?

And my Lord, can a pilgrimage suffice for Your servant,

when a lifetime holds all its lapses?

And You bear witness: I have hurt no soul, nor done harm,

nor acted unjustly in my open speech or passing thoughts.

Neither misery nor happiness has robbed me

of the wisdom and forbearance You bestowed on me.

Nothing but goodness has stirred among my secret thoughts,

at a court whose wishes are benevolent.

And I have spent no night but like the son of Mary, compassionate

toward my enviers, seeking forgiveness for my enemies.

No soul has been laden with love for its homeland

like mine, in my deeds and in my outpourings.

And I—without claiming credit before You for obedience—

honor and highly prize my zakat among the obligations.

I fulfill it to the utmost, for it is justice and mercy,

while ascetics neglect it in their secluded retreats.

And You are the master of pardon; erase with the pure whiteness

of forgiveness what I have blackened on my pages.

And whoever is beguiled by the world's smile

dies like one slain by graceful women's smiles.

    And a cavalcade, white-footed like fortune's advance,

noble in its retinue and mighty in its strides,

travels through a land that brought forth the finest nation,

and beneath the sky of revelation and the suras.

It pours good fortune upon it in its morning journeys,

and cloaks it in security in its afternoon journeys.

When you visit, my lord, Muhammad's tomb,

and kiss the resting place of the fragrant bones,

and eyes overflow with tears and reverence

for Ahmad, between the curtain and the chambers,

and light shines beneath every mountain pass,

and fragrance wafts beneath every pebble,

for him who made God's religion manifest upon a wasteland,

and built the towers of glory upon a desert,

then say to God's Messenger: O finest messenger,

I confide to you the sorrows that you know.

Your peoples, in the lands' east and west,

are like the People of the Cave, in deep slumber.

    فَما بالُهُم في حالِكِ الظُلُماتِ

    In their right hands are two lights: the Quran and the Sunna;

why, then, are they in pitch-black darkness?

    فَما ضَرَّهُم لَو يَعمَلونَ لِآتي

    That is the past of their glory and their pride;

what harm would it do them to work for what is to come?

This is an age whose earth and sky

are an arena for a bold man of great vitality.

In it, a people have walked the sky and built

    unassailable battleships among the constellations.

So say: My Lord, grant my nation success in mighty deeds,

and make deeds and firm resolves beautiful to it.
