وَأَودى بِزَينِ شَبابِ الزَمَن
Time carried away the son of Yemen's Imam,
Time has taken the son of Yemen's Imam,
And claimed the pride of the youth of the age.
And destroyed the beauty of the age's youth.

عَلَيهِ وَتَبكي القَنا في عَدَن
And in Sana'a the swords spent the night weeping
In Sanaa, swords weep for him,
For him, and in Aden the spears weep.
As does the reed-pipe in Aden.

وَمالَ الحُسَينُ فَعَزَّ الحَسَن
And Najd wailed, and the Hijaz cried out,
Nejd wails, and the Hejaz cries out,
And al-Husayn fell, so al-Hasan grew dear.
Al-Husayn leans, so Al-Hasan is honored.

وَغَصَّتand were thronged مَآتِمُهُhis funeral gatherings فيin المُدُنthe cities
وَغَصَّت مَآتِمُهُ في المُدُن
And his mourning gatherings were thronged in the tents,
His tents are crowded with mourners,
And his funeral gatherings were thronged in the cities.
And his cities fill with grief.

And if a dead man could walk to offer condolences,
If the dead could walk to condole,
Dhu Yazan would have walked at his funeral gatherings.
He of grandeur would walk amidst the mourners.

A youth who, true to his name, was God's sword,
A noble whose name matched his being,
And the Messenger's sword, and the homeland's sword.
Sword of God, the Messenger, and the Nation.

And for his beauty he was called the Full Moon;
Called "Full Moon" for his beauty,
Yet what is the full moon—what is its worth, and whose son is it?
Yet the moon cannot equal him, son of the eminent.

Take noble consolation, Imam of the guarded realm,
Consolation, O noble guardian,
And ease the weight of grave calamities; it will ease.
Lessen this great affliction, it is arduous.

And you are the man whom his faith sustains,
You are steadfast in his faith,
And your expectation of God is a good one.
Your view of God is goodly.

But when did fate's heart ever soften?
But when did the heart of fate soften?
And whence has death a mind that weighs?
When did death's reasoning weigh and assess?

The far-off Arabs offer you sympathy,
The Arabs who have left appeal to you,
And the Arabic tongue is but a homeland.
Yet only Yemen was their homeland.

They would unite your people with the Muslims,
Are the weighty duties and gracious traditions,
Of immense duties and easy traditions.

Their prophet being one,
The prophet of right guidance, the prophet of eloquence.
The prophet of right, the prophet of tongues.

As they united in the shadows of the Holy House,

Sits in the memorial of the Imam's son,
And mourns him with streaming tears.
Weeping for him with intense tears.

Spreading the fragrance of two bunches of lilies,
Of poetry upon the hills of Yemen.
In the poetry of Yemen's hills,

The two flutter above the departed's remains
Waving above the departed one’s tomb,
As ripe fruit flutters high upon the boughs.
The gentle breeze at the top of the branch.

He fulfilled his duty, so he passed,
A youth sincere in secret, pure in public.
A lad of pure heart and public candor.

He plunged into deep seas like mountains,
Broad of base and lofty of summit.
The lofty dunes, the tall waves.

He strode with a lion's stride, without weapons,
He walked with a lion’s stride, neither in arms,
Nor armor, nor shields.
Nor armor, nor madness.

When did you become, O sea, sheath of swords,
Though we had known you as the sheath of ships?
When we knew you as sheath of ships?

And you were a casket for precious pearls;
You were protector of the bountiful pearls,
How, then, was it taken away, and why was it not preserved?
So how were you stripped, and why were you not guarded?

You won a peerless jewel
You won a rare and unique pearl,
Of wondrous, auspicious nobility:
Of glorious and ingenious Yemeni nobility.

إِلَيكَ وَأَعطى التُرابَ البَدَن
A youth who yielded his soul for his companions
A lad who gave his soul for his comrades to you
To you, and gave his body to the dust.
And gave his body to the earth.

And youth's diversions grew trivial in his eyes,
The joys of youth meant little to him,
And but for high honor's claims, they would not have grown trivial.
Were it not for the rights of the sublime, he would not have bowed.

And he plunged into you to rescue his peers,
He entered you to save his companions,
And fate had already lain in wait for him.
And fate lay in wait for him.

You betrayed a youth who was not among betrayers,
You betrayed a lad not of traitors,
And you betrayed a faithful man who had never betrayed.
And betrayed a loyal man who never betrayed.

A brave man's death is not caused by courage,
In courage there is no death for the courageous,
Nor has cowardice prolonged the coward's life.
Nor did cowardice prolong the coward’s life.

But when a youth's appointed hour arrives,
Rather, when the time of the lad is due,
He dies; and he lives if it has not yet come.
He dies, though he lives if not due.

Father of the ruddy, supple spears,
Father of long spears and shining blades.

The martyr of gallantry: al-Baqi' was
Martyr of manliness, the Baqee’
More deserving of him than Yemen's soil.
Was worthier of him than Yemen’s soil.

Did they wash him, then, with the tears of those seeking bounty?
Did they wash him in the tears of the chaste?
And he dwelt in every grieving heart.
Did he settle in every grieving heart?

Indeed, time's vicissitudes drowned your son,
The caprice of time has drowned your son,
And you drowned its children in favors.
And you have drowned his sons in kindness.

Do you remember when he folded away the months,
Do you remember as he spent the months,
And when he was like a fawn, sweet, with a mellow nasal voice,
As he was sweet as a bud, most melodious?
وَإِذand when هُوَhe حَولَكَaround you حَسَنُthe beauty of القُصورِthe palaces

And when around you he was the palaces' beauty,
As around you he was the beauty of palaces,
And the gardens' fragrance and the serenity of time?
Pleasant gardens and the prime of time?

His cheerful smile was a delight to the eyes,
His cheerfulness was a delight to behold,
And his voice's melody a delight to the ear.
His voice a delight to hear.

He played with his forelock between your hands,
He would tease his forelock in your hands,
As a colt played with the slack of its rein.
As the skilled horseman teased the horse’s forelock.

أَدَلَّ بِمِخلَبِهِ وَاِفتَتَن
And when, like a lion cub, he imitated lions,
As a cub he would mimic the lions,
He took pride in his claw and was enchanted by it.
Lowering his claw, utterly charming.

Then he grew up and took his stand behind the lair,
He grew up, and stood behind the den,
Kindling wars and extinguishing strife.
Growing ferocious, extinguishing afflictions.

Why, then, has he become one of the lifeless,
Why did he end up among the fallen?
And turned to dust, as though he had never been?
And become hidden, as if never having been?

I strung tears into an elegy for him,
I have strung tears in elegy for him,
And interspersed them with sorrow and grief.
And elaborated them with anguish and sadness.
