They planted your remains in the sands as a banner,
They buried your remains in the sands, a banner
Rousing the valley morning and evening.
That rouses the valley, morning and evening alike,
ياO وَيحَهُمalas for them نَصَبواthey erected مَناراًa beacon مِنof دَمٍblood

Alas for them! They raised a beacon of blood,
Alas for them! They erected a minaret of blood
Inspiring hatred in tomorrow's generation.
That inspires coming generations with hatred,

What harm would there be if, tomorrow, they made the bond
It would not have harmed them to make relations
Between peoples one of affection and brotherhood?
Between peoples, affection and brotherhood,

A wound cries out through the ages, and a victim
A wound cries out afar, a sacrifice
Gropes for crimson freedom.
Groping for crimson freedom,

O sword, unsheathed in the wilderness,
O naked sword, wearing epochs
Clothing swords through the ages in sharpness.
With the swords over time erased,

Those deserts are the sheath of every Indian-steel sword
Those wilds are the scabbard of every polished sword
That fought the enemy and acquitted itself nobly.
That did its duty against the enemy flawlessly,

And graves of the dead among Umayya's young men
And the graves of Umayyad youth and elders
And their elders, who have never ceased to live.
Who did not cease to live,

Had a stronghold sought refuge from them in the constellation al-Jawza,
Had Maqil taken refuge in al-Jawza
They would have stormed al-Jawza in its towers.
They would have entered its citadels unopposed,
فَتَحواthey conquered الشَمالَthe north سُهولَهُits plains وَجِبالَهُand its mountains

They conquered the north, its plains and its mountains,
They opened its plains and mountains in the north
And pushed deeper, then settled al-Khadra, the Green Land.
And penetrated deep to colonize the Green,
وَبَنَواand they built حَضارَتَهُمtheir civilization فَطاوَلَso rivaled رُكنُهاits pillar

And built their civilization, its pillar rising to rival
And built their civilization, its pillar grew high
Dar al-Salam and lofty Jilliq.
The Abode of Peace overshadowed Syria,
خُيِّرتَyou were given a choice فَاِختَرتَso you chose المَبيتَspending the night عَلىwith الطَوىhunger

لَمdid not تَبنِyou build جاهاًprestige أَوor تَلُمَّyou amass ثَراءَwealth
Offered a choice, you chose to spend the night hungry;
You were given the choice and chose to camp on the hills
You built no status, nor amassed wealth.
Not to build glory or amass wealth,
إِنَّindeed البُطولَةَheroism أَنto تَموتَyou die مِنof الظَماthirst

لَيسَis not البُطولَةُheroism أَنto تَعُبَّyou gulp down الماءَwater
Indeed, heroism is to die of thirst;
True heroism is to die of thirst
Heroism is not to gulp down water.
Heroism is not to exhaust water,

Africa, the cradle of lions and their grave,
Africa, cradle and grave of lions
Cried out in grief for you, men and women alike.
Cried out for you, men and women,

And Muslims, despite the diversity of their lands,
And Muslims, however far their lands
Have no consolation amid this calamity.
Can offer no solace for the bereaved,

And the men of the pre-Islamic age, from beyond their graves,
While behind their graves, the Age of Ignorance
Weep for Zayd al-Khayl and al-Falha'.
Weeps for Zayd’s horses and horsemen,

In the care and keeping of God, the Generous,
In the care of the Noble, the Preserver
Lies a body in Barqa, pillowed on the desert.
A body in Barqah sealed off the desert,

The millstone of battles left him no bones
The harsh turns of fate did not destroy
To decay; nor did the spears leave any blood.
Weapons wear out but do not shed blood,

Both turned to dust behind the sand-sweeping winds.

The hero of Badawah did not raid
A tank, nor did he ride the skies.
On a tank, or ride the skies,

But a companion of horses, he defended their backs,
Rather, a brother to horses who protected their pastures
And waged battle from their manes.
And managed their heated zeal,

Yesterday he answered the judgment of earth with a soul
He answered the decree of the land with devotion
That feared no judgment but heaven's.
Fearing only the decree of Heaven,

He came with head held high, as if
Socrates, dragging his robe before the judges.
Socrates dragged to face the judges,

An old man, master of his years, he did not burst
A sheikh who restrained his years, he did not burst out
Into tears like a child for fear of punishment.
Like a child weeping in fear of punishment,

And a man seasoned in affairs, he had lived through their prosperity;
And a brother in ordeals who lived through them
Then they changed, so he expected adversity.
So he expected the worst in the trials,

Lions roar in irons, and you will never see
The lion roars in chains but you will never see
A lion in prison weeping in abasement.
In prison, a hyena weep pleadingly,
وَأَتىand came الأَسيرُthe captive يَجُرُّdragging ثِقلَthe weight حَديدِهِof his irons

And the captive came, dragging the weight of his irons—
The captive came dragging his heavy fetters
A lion dragging a speckled serpent.
A lion dragging a groveling snake,

The fetters bit into both his legs, yet he did not buckle,
The shackles bit at his legs but he did not flinch
And the years had carried his frame toward decay.
And the years walked off with his body to its end,

Ninety years—had they mounted the shoulders of a towering peak,
Ninety, if they rode the backs of lofty camels
Its heights would have stepped down in exhaustion.
Their highlands would crawl away spent,

They escaped the judge's notice and lost their due share
Hidden from the judge, she was deprived of the kindness
Of kindness from soldiers—noble commanders.
Of officers, noble leaders,

And old age shakes every well-bred heart
And the years blow fiercely at every refined heart
That has known grandfathers and encountered fathers.
That knew its ancestors and forefathers,

They handed the executioner a mighty, noble lion,
They handed the glorious one to the executioner
Who tended wounds and set captives free,
To treat wounds and free captives,
وَيُشاطِرُand shares with الأَقرانَequals ذُخرَthe reserve سِلاحِهِof his weapons

And shared his store of arms with his equals,
To share the reserve of his weapons with his comrades
And arrayed enemies around his dining table.
And hold the enemies around them at bay,

And they chose the degrading rope as a death
And they chose the shameful noose as the death
For the lion, breathing out his soul beside it.
Of a lion spewing foam around him,

They denied death by keen swords and spears
They denied the death by swords and spears
To him who dealt the thrust that left a gaping wound.
Of one who could deliver the most valiant blow,

Indeed, I have seen civilization's hand obsessed
I saw the hand of civilization set aflame
With justice—now tearing it down, now building it up.
With truth, destroying and building both,

Except those who reject oppression, and the weak.
Except the obstinate victims and weak,

O people close by, listening,
That I may compose an elegy for Umar the martyr?
Let me compose an elegy for the martyr's life,
