    They deceived her by calling her beautiful,

    And beauties are beguiled by praise.

    Do you think she has pretended to forget my name, now that

    The names of her admirers have multiplied?

    If she sees me, she turns away from me, as though there had never

    Been anything between me and her.

    فَكَلامٌ فَمَوعِدٌ فَلِقاءُ

    A glance, then a smile, then a greeting;

    Then talk, then a rendezvous, then a meeting.

    When we were together—and do not ask how we were—

    We gave one another as much love as we wished.

    And over us stood a guardian of chastity,

    Against whom passions grew weary struggling.

    She tugged at my unyielding robe and said,

    “You are the people, O poets!

    So fear God concerning maidens’ hearts,

    For maidens’ hearts are air.

    فَكَلامٌ فَمَوعِدٌ فَلِقاءُ

    A glance, then a smile, then a greeting;

    Then talk, then a rendezvous, then a meeting.

    Then a parting in which there is a cure,

    Or a parting from which the malady comes.”
