The youth of intellect and lofty melody

Has passed away, but his merits endure.

So there was no commoner it did not comfort,

Nor king whose gathering it did not grace.

And no town was without its fragrance,

And no region lacked word of it.

Whenever he sang to humankind, he almost

Made rhyme itself speak with a rhyme.

Some copper vaunts itself above diamonds

When it holds his precious melodies.

And his strings hold sway over the soul,

    Upon the oud, speaking and recounting;

And reach the seat of its desires,

    And reveal its hidden secret.

And how many a marvel he has among his songs—

Each is the sun, with no second.

When connoisseurs call it out to one another,

Say: lightning and thunder from a morning raincloud.

But if they whisper it after sounding it aloud,

Then it is the soft clink of jewels upon a beauty.

Verdi indeed grew gray and passed beyond old age,

    Yet Aida's youth remains radiant.

She portrays Egypt for the present age

As it was in ages gone by.

And through her we recall those nights,

And we seek those night-wandering visions.

And we weep for our vanished glory,

And we mourn our bygone days.

So, O family of Verdi, we offer you condolences,

And we weep with the family in tears.

In the one you lost, we have lost a poet

For whom time falls short as a narrator.
