The apparition began with kindness and came to visit.
O messenger of favor, may you be spared stumbling.

عادَةُ النورِ يُنزِلُ الأَبصارا
If you spend the night within the eyelids, you are at home;
light is wont to dwell in the eyes.

It visited while war raged between my eyelid and my sleep;
darkness had readied weapons for that war.

Your deed, O vision, is beautiful to me;
the finest deed is one that meets a need.

him for his offense with tenderness and apology.

while one wounded by humankind seeks revenge?

something from my two eyes—and it came to pass.

The bane of counsel is its turning into nagging;
and counsel does harm when it is given in public.

They said, 'Patience.' So I said, 'Bring endurance.'

O my nights, I have not found you long,
after my night, nor have I found you short.

لا يُبالي بِحَملِهِنَّ صِغارا
Indeed, whoever bears great calamities
does not mind bearing them when small.

مُدمِنُ الخَمرِ لا يُحِسُّ الخُمارا
We have not sobered up from you, O Time, to complain;
the habitual wine-drinker feels no hangover.

So take the cup away in pity, or carry on;
good sense has left the drunkards' hands.
